As DC's 'Flashpoint' series came to a close and we said goodbye to a universe that has existed since 1938 and hello to DC's New 52 series', a whole new universe of continuity and changes came about, but something strange was happening that not many people initially realized...

Hidden in the pages of every single first issue of the New 52 line-up was a hooded figure, a lady... A mystery. As per usual the internet exploded with theories, pictures and the seemingly all too common mass arguments.

For those of you who missed it (We don't blame you if you did, I mean it was supposed to be hidden after all), I have compiled a short 2 minute video below highlighting her many subtle appearances...

Since then of course, the elusive figure's identity has been revealed and the mystery surrounding her has all but vanished into the ether of the world of online discussion.

For those who don't know by now, her name is Pandora and she has had probably one of the most tragic existences of any DC character out there, and that my internet dwelling friends is what we are here to talk about today.

WARNING: Below this will be some spoilers...

The beginning is always a good place to start with any story but to get to the beginning of this tale we will need to go back, I mean waaaaaay back, let's say roughly about 3,000,000 days, back to a much simpler time.

Pictured above is Pandora caring for her sick brother in a tepee located in Prehistoric Macedonia at roughly 8000 BC. This, believe it or not is more than likely one of Pandora's last moments of clarity and freedom as she sings the song of her people.

As Pandora searches in the woods to find berries in an effort to heal her sick brother, she stumbles across something shining in the undergrowth, as she picks it up it explodes with a blinding light and she is knocked unconscious only to wake up hours later and stumble back to her village.

Nothing could have prepared her for what she would find when she arrived...

Pandora had unbeknownst to herself unleashed the archaic seven sins of man unto the world around her and consequentially arrived at her village to find that in only one afternoon the sins had turned her entire family and everyone in the village against themselves to the point of murdering each other in cold blood until there was no-one and nothing left.

Amidst the chaos and terror, the sin 'Wrath' looks towards Pandora and with a mouthful of her loved ones says something to her more horrible than she could have ever imagined...

"Mother. You've returned. Worry not for us, we've plenty to eat... We will be strong now."

In an instance Pandora is transported to the Rock of Eternity to stand before the council of wizards and be judged for her actions. Alongside her stand the men that would become 'The Phantom Stranger' and 'The Question'.

Now this is where Pandora's story takes a turn for the worst. The council of wizards are disinterested in her pleas of sorrow and ignorance towards her actions. Pandora's punishment would come in several forms...

  • First of all, she was bestowed scars that burn for the entirety of her existence.
  • Secondly, she was condemned to walk the earth in a state of perpetual un-death for all eternity.
  • And finally, Pandora was not only forced to witness the pain and suffering that she had unknowingly released onto the world but would be cursed to forever feel it with her entire being. Every bit of pain, every bit of suffering.

Upon judgement and sentencing the council send Pandora home to live out her punishment...

So let's take a quick recap of what has happened so far...

A girl who was trying to help her dying brother, found a box and just like anyone would have done, opened it. After being knocked unconscious she awoke to find that everyone she had ever loved or cared about had been turned mad and killed each other at the hands of seven vicious monsters. Shortly after finding this out, she was condemned to eternal pain and cursed to walk the earth having been convinced that all suffering that surrounded her and all of mankind was her fault. She then single-handedly dug graves for and buried her entire village with nothing left to hold onto but the song of her people... The very song that used to bring her hope now only carried her pain.

Don't worry though, I mean if we have learnt anything from comic books, it is that a tragic life will only end up making you so much more of a Badass.

Pandora has now had many years to train herself to become an immensely powerful warrior who can in her own words...

"Strike through the veil that separates the living world from the spirits beyond."

She is responsible for helping create the New 52 (Prime-Earth) universe and has sworn a vow to destroy the sins of the world by any means necessary. The council of wizards has since refuted their earlier decision to punish her as wrong, and confirmed to her that they now understand that she was just an innocent girl who was curious and made a mistake, that she was someone who did not deserve her punishment. Unfortunately the council of wizards were destroyed before they could make reparations for their mistakes, once again leaving Pandora with no other option but to fight.

And this ladies and gentlemen is the beginning of that story...
