The reason I love this website is because everything is opinion. I know everyone is not going to agree with the five films that I recognize here on my list. But that is fine. I'd love to hear feedback and see what you think. Also, this will be spoiler free, so you do not need to worry about plot points or endings being revealed here.
Anyways, lets start with some films that I personally loved, but are going down as Honorable Mentions.
They are: American Sniper, 22 Jump Street, The Lego Movie, Neighbors, The Gambler, Top Five, Interstellar, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes and St. Vincent
Foxcatcher is a great film. It is a slow film, but it is a great film. Mainly this movie makes my list solely on performances. Everyone keeps talking about Steve Carrel for an Oscar and his performance as John Du Pont. But, Channing Tatum is the MVP of this film, and he will not get the credit he deserves. Tatum's determination to be the best wrestler in the world and the struggles he goes through is something to see. He is determined the get out of the shadows of his big brother (played by Mark Ruffalo) and he somewhat finds that in John Du Pont. Somewhat being the key word. This movie is definitely worth a watch.
4. Guardians of the Galaxy
What a fun and fantastic movie! This is probably my third favorite Marvel film of all time! Chris Pratt was the perfect choice for Starlord. Bradley Cooper and Vin Diesel voicing Rocket and Groot was spot on. Marvel really did well with this film. This is purely two hours of just straight entertainment and that is why it is one of the best films of the year.
3. Gone Girl
This movie is nuts. I went into this film blind. I did not read the book. I had not seen the trailer, and boy, I was entertained. I have never left a theater so satisfied and so pissed off at the same time. If you have seen this movie, then you know exactly what I mean. Pike, who plays missing Amy, deserves the Oscar in my opinion. It's a great cast including Neil Patrick Harris and Tyler Perry in supporting roles to Affleck and Pike. See this movie. Trust me, you will not be let down.
2. Captain America: The Winter Soldier
This is my favorite Marvel movie of all time and I think it is because it's not really a super-hero movie. This movie actually felt like something that could really happen in our world at any time. It really is a well done political thriller based in a super-hero setting. And it is entertaining as hell, and very well done. Captain America became my favorite Avenger after this film (sorry Iron Man). I am stoked for Civil War!
If it were up to me, this film would sweep the Oscars.
Best Actor: Miles Teller
Best Supporting Actor: J.K. Simmons
Best Film: Whiplash
Best Director: Damien Chazelle
Okay, so I guess it would not be a sweep, but those are four major categories that would all go to the same film. I know only Simmons really has a chance at winning (which is a shame), but this film is not getting all the credit it deserves. Teller is a revelation and he probably will not even be nominated by the Academy. Chazelle has made the best film of the year in my opinion. It is heartbreaking, intense, funny, thrilling, and satisfying all at the same time. Hands down the best film of year.
