As millions counted down, watched the colorful ball drop, and awaited the start of a new year, Disney had their own little surprise ready once the clock struck midnight. Disney cleverly chose 12 a.m. to release brand new footage of Kenneth Branagh's live-action Cinderella.
Check out the magical footage below!
Now, we're all familiar with the story, right? Sad little blonde girl abused by her stepmother and stepsisters can't go to the ball, which is her one chance for a little fun and freedom. Fairy godmother swoops in, Cinderella goes to the ball, but wait! ...she lost her shoe! Charming prince looks for her, finds her, and yay! They live happily ever aft...blah blah blah. So, as you can tell, I was never a huge Cinderella fan. The girl didn't do much.
With that being said, this latest trailer of Branagh's adaptation makes me a believer in the classic fairytale! Just from watching the gorgeous footage above, one can tell that the classic fairytale has undergone a much needed modern twist.
Even the evil stepmother (Cate Blanchett) does some badass glass shoe smashing! Definitely kind of a buzzkill if you were hoping your prince was going use the shoe to find you...
It seems like in this version of the story, Cinderella will be taking things into her own hands. During an interview with E!, director Sir Kenneth Branagh actually comments on the personal journey (Cinder)Ella will be undergoing throughout the film:
Life can be pretty rough sometimes and it's a wonderful thing to be able to invite the world to the ball...And then, from the inside, we've given it a contemporary feel that is human and humane and strangely enough, not built around the idea that Cinderella's life depends on finding a man or things, like clothes or a title, or just hoping this magic will come along. It's much more about who she is, what she feels about herself, and taking that kind of sort of spiritual cue to make it refreshing in a contemporary way...From the inside out, we see a girl who does not see herself as a victim. She’s her own gal and she’s good company...She redefines goodness, I think, in the performance and she makes it sexy, and cool, and playful.”
Sounds like you're doing something right Mr. Branagh!
To hold us over until what I'm sure will be a much anticipated release, let's look at some beautiful stills directly from the film!
