(Warning: This post may contain teeny-tiny spoilers as to how Naughty Dog's video game epic The Last Of Us ends. So erm...be careful...)
The Last Of Us is one of the best games of the last decade. We all know it, whether or not you've played it! Don't you find that there is always someone in the near vicinity salivating over its emotional content and generally berating people for not giving in to its charms? The hallmarks of sheer awesomeness.
All the lunchtime plaudits are correct. It's perfect in multiple respects - the storyline is gripping, the acting is superb, its characters and stakes believable, the gameplay is solid and Gustavo Santaolalla's score still sends chills thundering up and down my spine. But this is no review.
A few days ago, the NeoGAF community came together to undertake an exercise in altering perfection - could they recreate the ending of The Last Of Us? Some users were aghast at the proposition, some were indifferent and a few jumped at the chance at flexing their creative muscles.
And out of the crush of voices came NeoGAF user Erevador's legendary proposition. An idea so epic that even Neil Druckmann, the writer and director of The Last Of Us, lauded it on Twitter. Let's have a read...
Remember... beware the tiny spoilers...
The Last Of Us - Alternate Ending
Ellie and Joel are driving away from the hospital. He has saved her, and murdered the fireflies.
In the rearview mirror, Joel sees a car approaching. He lightly hits the gas pedal, trying to put a little distance between him and the car that follows. The car keeps gaining on him, it pulls up beside him.
Joel looks out the window and sees the last person he wants to see right now.
It is Vin Diesel. A relic from Joel's dark drift racing past.
Vin gives Joel a look that only says one thing. This challenge is on baby.
Joel knows what he must do, Ellie has never seen him like this. The blood of a racer courses through his veins.
"I know you can do this Joel. The blood of a racer courses through your veins."
With Ellie's encouragement, Joel slams on the gas. He races Vin Diesel. Joel is faster than Vin Diesel. In fact, he is better than Vin Diesel in lots of ways.
He wins the race.
Ellie and Joel embrace, victorious. He holds her close, and whispers in her ear.
"You know, Elllie, we really are 2 fast 2 furious."
Ridiculous! Of course Vin Diesel would have survived the cordyceps apocalypse, he is Vin Diesel after all.
What do you think? Would you have changed the ending? If so, how? Pop your ten cents in the comments!
