2015 is going to be a year for the horror movies we thought were done scarring us. Sequels often draw a resigned sigh from cinema fans - can't we have something new already? - but this year sees the return of horror franchises so frightening, imaginative, and downright awesome that we just couldn't leave them alone.
Starting with the mildest and working down to 2015's most depraved horrors, check out 5 horror sequels returning to spark nightmares all over again...
5. Insidious 3
Release date: June 5
After a sequel which many fans found to be disappointing, hopes will be high for Insidious 3. There are certainly some jump-scares to be had, but the imagery and color palette used in the Insidious franchise create an atmosphere too fantastical to be hardcore scary-scary, but it doesn't suffer for it. Let's hope this colorful, intriguing series can find its feet again in 2015.
4. [REC] 4: Apocalypse
Release date: January 2
The gorgeous but supremely unlucky Ángela Vidal returns in what is actually a direct sequel to [REC] 2. This means we get original heroine Manuela Velasco and horror genius Jaume Balagueró back at the helm, so to say that [REC] 4 will blow the previous release out of the water would not be an overstatement. Some of you lucky ducks might have seen this one already, so remember to report back to the MP horror community what you thought!
3. Phantasm 5: Ravager
Release date: no date confirmed
The 'final' installment of the Tall Man saga (yeah, right) comes only 17 years after the last one! Better late than never, I guess, although I'm sure the nefarious undertaker's new victims wish he'd never arrived at all... The movie will be the first Phantasm not directed by original helmer Don Coscarelli, but don't worry - we're still getting Angus Scrimm as the one and only Tall Man.
2. Sinister 2
Release date: August 21
I'm not sure how Scott Derrickson's gonna follow up on the magnificent terror of the first Sinister movie, which was easily the scariest film of 2012, if not the decade. Seriously, there's something about Sinister that just got under my skin. Confession: that's why there's no picture of Mr. Boogie above. I just can't deal with looking at him for that long.
1. Human Centipede III (Final Sequence)
Release date: June 20
Oh. My. Gross. Just how can the third installment of butt-to-mouth fetish freak-out horror Human Centipede possibly eclipse the scatalogical, parasexual, brain-twistingly brutal exploits of the second movie? I don't know, but it's rumored that the centipede is gonna be 500 humans long, so maybe leave your grandma at home for this one...
