Astonishingly, the image shown above is not an illustration of Marvel Comics' superhero The Silver Surfer. In actual fact, it's a male model plastered in body paint by the awesome Hollywood make-up artist, Cris Alex.
Alex, who has worked on the likes of X-Men: Days of Future Past and The Amazing Spider-Man 2, used 'PPI Skin Illustrator' makeup and well-lit photography to achieve the effect. Pretty awesome, right?
The project, entitled 'Silver Surfer Body Paint' recreates - pretty accurately! - Ron Lim’s cover of Silver Surfer Vol 3 Issue #20 (shown below).

This must have taken hours to finish!
According to the Marvel comics, The Silver Sufer was a young astronomer named Norrin Radd from planet Zenn-La. He saved his planet from a planet devourer named Galactus by serving as his herald i.e. he found other planets for him to consume.
The close-ups look even better!
In return, Galactus gave Radd a tiny portion of his power. But over time Radd acquired vast power, a new body and a surfboard-like craft on which he could travel faster than light - he then became known as 'The Silver Surfer.'
A make-up masterpiece
When his search for planets took him to Earth, he met the Fantastic Four, a team of powerful superheroes who helped him rediscover his humanity and nobility of spirit. Betraying Galactus, the Surfer saved Earth but was exiled there as punishment.
