Marvel has become a complete powerhouse in the film industry and the Marvel Cinematic Universe alone is becoming one of the biggest franchises there is, especially considering they are all a shared universe unlike some franchises were the stories are unrelated or start over.
Let's not forget about the plethora of Marvel films outside of the shared universe. There is no shortage of films like Blade, Spider-Man, X-Men, and Fantastic 4 to have hit the big screen in the last 15 years.
Marvel had been trying it's hand at the movie industry way before they started making these big blockbuster films though. Some of these movies you've probably heard of, some you may have taken the time to watch, and some of them you will probably never see.
Let's get started.
1. Captain America (1990)
Frozen in the ice for decades, Captain America is freed to battle against arch-criminal The Red Skull. Sounds like what you would expect from a Captain America film, right? Well don't expect it to be anything like the newer films, but if you don't mind cheesy films then you might enjoy this American-Yugoslavian made superhero movie.
2. The Punisher (1989)
When Frank Castle's family is murdered by criminals, he wages war on crime as a vigilante assassin known only as the Punisher. Yep, same basic story as the other Punisher movies. If your keeping count, there are three of them now and they are all unrelated. Apparently The Punisher is cool enough to keep making movies about, but they aren't good enough movies to ever warrant a direct sequel. Either way, this is [The Punisher](movie:1007544) for people who love the '80s.
3. Doctor Strange (1978)
A psychiatrist becomes the new Sorcerer Supreme of the Earth in order to battle an evil Sorceress from the past. One of the older Marvel movies, this made-for-TV film was created as an attempt to be a pilot for a TV series, but CBS just wasn't interested in picking up a series after showing the film. In all honesty, it looks more like a '70s porno than a superhero movie.
4. Nick Fury Agent Of Shield (1998)
Nick Fury is brought back to fight the menace of Hydra after living in exile in the Yukon since the end of the Cold War. The children of the former Hydra head, Baron Von Stucker, have taken charge of the terrorist organization. Under the lead of his vicious daughter, Viper, Hydra has seized a deadly virus and threatens the destruction of America. The covert agency SHIELD brings Fury out of retirement to fight the terrorists. Another made-for-TV movie with the hopes of starting a TV series, yeah guess how that turned out.
5. The Fantastic 4 (1994)
When an experimental space voyage goes awry, four people are forever changed by cosmic rays: Reed Richards, inventor and leader of the group gains the ability to stretch his body and takes the name Mr. Fantastic. His girlfriend, Sue Storm, gains the ability to turn invisible and create force fields, becoming The Invisible Girl. Her little brother, Johnny Storm, becomes The Human Torch with the ability to control fire, including covering his own body with flames. The pilot, Ben Grimm, is turned into the super-strong, super-tough Thing. Together they become a team of super-heroes and use their unique powers to foil the evil plans of villains. This film was never suppose to see the light of day and pretty much didn't. It was made so the movie company could retain the rights to the franchise and was never released. I will say though, if you absolutely must see this Roger Corman version of the Fantastic Four, you can find the full movie on Youtube.
6. Howard The Duck (1986)
A sarcastic humanoid duck is pulled from his home world to Earth where he must stop an alien invader. Okay you've probably seen this if you watch a lot of movies, but how could I not include this one? While not a superhero, he is a Marvel character, and it was the first appearance of a Marvel character on the big screen in a very very long time.
7. Man-Thing (2005)
Agents of an oil tycoon vanish while exploring a swamp marked for drilling. The local sheriff investigates and faces a Seminole legend come to life: Man-Thing, a shambling swamp-monster whose touch burns those who feel fear. Not the oldest or rarest movie on the list but it did have a pretty underwhelming and off the radar release. That's true for about every movie that is debuted on the SyFy channel though, at least for ones not named Sharknado. Still a decent little movie for what it is, with a cool creature.
8. Captain America (1944)
Superhero Captain America battles the evil forces of the archvillain called The Scarab, who poisons his enemies and steals a secret device capable of destroying buildings by sound vibrations. This was a black and white serial film done in 15 chapters. It was the highest budget serial ever done and the first theatrical appearance of a Marvel character ever. Something that wouldn't happen again until the arrival of our duck friend from before.
