I have been wishing for news like this ever since Altair showed up on my TV screen in my dark student apartment. Not content with releasing two main [Assassin's Creed](movie:437814) games in one year, (its getting harder to keep up with these guys though) Ubisoft will be stepping up its Assassin game next year by expanding into the world of Hollywood with a movie based on the franchise. The first project on the production line for Ubisoft Motion Pictures, Assassin’s Creed will star Michael Fassbender in the lead role and will be directed by Justin Kurzel (Snowtown).

It was originally scheduled for release on Memorial Day 2015, but for not so obvious reasons, it kept being pushed back several times. A speculation as to why, could be Fassbender's hectic schedule. But at least one of the release date changes seemed to be based on Twentieth Century Fox’s desire to avoid setting Assassin’s Creed up in competition with similar blockbusters, like [Avatar 2](movie:38662).

It was obvious that a 2015 release was not going to happen for Assassin’s Creed, but recently (January 5th) , TheWrap reports that Assassin’s Creed has a new release date: December 21st, 2016. Going head to head in theaters with Gareth Edwards’ Star Wars spinoff and James Cameron’s long-awaited sequel to Avatar – not exactly easy competition.

Concerning the Synopsis for Assassin’s Creed, there’s no official news yet, (Wishing its Altair, the origins was the best, then we slowly ease into Ezio's trilogy, that would be nothing but Perfect!) but UMP CEO Jean-Julien Baronnet has sadly confirmed that it won’t be a direct adaptation of any of the games, (there goes that dream) but It seems that the new Assassin's Creed movie is going to take place in Spain and focus on the infamous Inquisition led by Tomas de Torquemada.

According to these reports, Fassbender will play a death row inmate called Michael Lynch in the present day story-line, who unwillingly enters the Assassins vs. Templars conflict. And will also play Michael’s ancestor, an Assassin called Aguilar de Agarorobo, in the historical storyline.

The inmate gets subjected to tests from a researcher called Joseph that might be working for the Templar-led Abstergo corporation, ran by Alan Rikkan, who might not have a physical presence, only a looming voiceover.

Fassbender, through the Animus technology already seen in the games, explores his genetic memory to control Aguilar de Agarorobo, an assassin during the Spanish Inquisition. He'll be helped by a female assassin named Lara and they'll have to take down Tomas de Torquemada, the Templar leader of the Inquisition.

This setting can possibly still bring back what i was hoping for, Ezio Auditore da Firenze, or other characters from the Renaissance era games, to make an appearance. Again, the same report also claimed that Spanish Dominican friar Tomás de Torquemada, who appeared in Assassin’s Creed II, will be the main antagonist of the film.

I know, as we all do, Assassin’s Creed will be a significant release, not just for the genre of video game movies in general, but for Ubisoft. With the creators of the original IP taking strict creative control of the film, rather than handing it off to another production company, UMP’s approach could be what it takes to launch the first video game movie to become truly successful both critically and financially.

Meaning, best case scenario, Assassin’s Creed will become UMP’s "Iron Man" equivalent, boosting the studio in new heights, giving them the funding needed maybe to bring also other games to life! Like Splinter Cell has Tom Hardy attached to star, a script in place and Doug Liman set to direct, and a movie based on sandbox action game Watch Dogs – which "just" got released – already has Zombieland screenwriters Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick working on a script. Other projects currently in development at UMP include movies based on Far Cry, Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon and Raving Rabbids. (crazy, i know)

But for most of these to happen, UMP's cannot keep delaying our movie! We need certain promises fulfilled ASAP!

The Official Assassin’s Creed Movie will finally hit theaters on December 21st, 2016. (for now)

Do we have high hopes? Yes! Is Fassbender right for the role? Too late to change! are we asking the right questions? I dont know! let us know below.

Do you wish they should have stuck to the original games? Or is it better with a fresh new start?
