Everyone loves J.A.R.V.I.S. J.A.R.V.I.S. is Tony Stark/Iron Man's computer assistant that in some ways is the co-creator of the Iron Man suit and Arc reactor. Some of you may not remember that it stands for Just A Rather Very Intelligent System.
Well...you may have been asking the same question as me when a certain Edwin Jarvis was introduced on Marvel's Agent Carter. Is he in any way related to Tony Stark's AI J.A.R.V.I.S.?
To add to my confusion, I found a treasure trove of Marvel comics in the back shelves of my library and began reading them. It was only a few minutes into them, that I stumbled across a butler that served the Avengers team at Avengers Mansion, 890 Fifth Avenue, Manhattan, New York City.
Confused? I was.
I think however there is a plan. I know Marvel has a plan, so it's my duty as a true Marvel fan to theorize about what their plan is.
Let's start with Edwin Jarvis from Marvel's Agent Carter.
Edwin Jarvis from Marvel's Agent Carter is Howard Stark's butler. Howard Stark offers Jarvis's services to Peggy Carter (you'll remember she's Captain America's beautiful love interest from Captain America: The First Avenger) who is finding her footing after losing Captain America from Captain America: The First Avenger.
According to IMDB James D'arcy (Edwin Jarvis in Marvel's Agent Carter) is age 39. We can assume he is around that age then (maybe early thirties?) in Agent Carter. And if the events of Agent Carter are taking place shortly after WWII (it's to early to tell) then by the time the Avengers are around he will be around the age of 100.
And obviously, he's not around. Or is he? Here's where I think Tony Stark's AI comes into play.
I'm going to make a bet (and we'll see once we get through Marvel's Agent Carter) that Edwin Jarvis is either still alive or has just recently died by the events of the first Iron Man movie.
I'm also going to make a bet that he's so old he's retired from the superhero business, but that the tease for Avengers Tower in New York City (at the end of the Avengers) is a tease for a future return of the Edwin Jarvis butler. It could either be James D'arcy's version or a future reincarnation of Edwin Jarvis.
In fact, I almost think that Tony Stark grew up with Edwin Jarvis as his part-time dad. If you'll remember, Tony Stark has a rough relationship with Howard Stark because Howard never spent time with Tony. Could it be that Edwin Jarvis, in his old age, raised Tony and thus in honor of Edwin Tony created an AI named J.A.R.V.I.S.?
So where does the comic Edwin Jarvis come in?
There was once a time, years ago, when Avengers Mansion was infiltrated by truly horrible criminals. That day was the day I came the closest I had ever come to dying in the service of the Avengers. That was the day I was truly the most afraid for my entire life. But not anymore. (Edwin Jarvis)
Paul Bettany is playing the Vision in Avengers: Age of Ultron. Paul Bettany is also the voice for J.A.R.V.I.S. And Ultron is a robot based off the Iron Man suits that Tony, with the help of Bruce Banner, accidentally sets on course to exterminate superheroes.
Paul Bettany could play both J.A.R.V.I.S. and the Vision. But I'm betting my chips on something entirely different.
What if Tony Stark puts everything he's got into a last hope for humanity to stop Ultron? What if he puts the smartest, most loyal program he has into the body of an Iron Man suit? It's all or nothing.
This of course leaves a hole now. We have no J.A.R.V.I.S. but instead the incarnation of the AI in the form of Paul Bettany. It'd make sense right, given that Paul Bettany is already the voice for J.A.R.V.I.S?
And I'll bet that once J.A.R.V.I.S is gone, the Avengers get a butler to help them out at Avengers Tower. Who could be? Maybe Edwin Jarvis! Maybe the old man returns one last time or maybe it's Edwin Jarvis's son, who might turn out to be Edwin Jarvis jr.
