I have admitted numerous times on this site that I am not crafty in the slightest. This makes me apprehensive to even attempt cosplay. Maybe there's some finite amount of cosplay talent in the world and my lack of talent is equally matched in someone else's immense skill. That's kind of a nice thought!
With that in mind, let's take a look at some cosplayers have stepped up their game from scary to straight up terrifying! Maybe it's just me. Maybe I'm a gigantic baby. In any case, the following artists should to be recognized for all of their effort:
1. No Face Joker
Let's start with a classic. When it comes to really scary and shocking cosplay, you can't not mention this no face Joker that showed up and blew everyone's minds at San Diego Comic Con 2013. It's hard to see makeup and prostetics of this quality outside of the movies. It makes sense though since this particular costume came from the Cinema Makeup School.
2. Parasyte Hand
This one might is really simple and definitely more of a makeup thing than an entire costume but hear me out. The subtly in KickTyan's work is what makes it really horrifying. Not to mention it's so damn realistic. Imagine shaking this guy's hand and suddenly you feel this Migi parasite blink. Freaking blink, you guys. That's too much for me.
3. Silent Hill Nurse
How are you even supposed to react when you stumble upon a swarm of monster nurses from Silent Hill? I don't know. Run? Cry? Assume the fetal position? Well, I can assure you I'd be doing all of the above to get away from Shinadragonheart's cosplay.
4. Pan’s Labrynth Pale Man
I always found the Pale Man to be one of the scariest cinematic creatures. He's right up there with Slenderman, Doctor Who's the Silence, and Buffy the Vampire Slayer's the Gentlemen. But I must say that of all the creepy, tall, pale monsters Pale Man creeps me out the most. If I were to see this costume by CarnevaleObscura in real life I would run in the opposite direction and not even touch any grapes for a long long while.
5. Real Life Bert and Ernie
This is scary for entirely different reasons. Mainly because I can feel these two getting ready to pop into my dreams and murder my childhood memories. You can thank ProbableCause from Reddit for causing the immense distress you're probably feeling at this moment.
6. Scary Flesh Mask
This is not the first, and I'm sure far from the last time Moviepilot will pay tribute to the wickedly skilled makeup artist Sandra Holmbom. Sandra is also known for making the "flesh mask" trend popular. Check out her blog, YouTube channel, and Instagram for more gorgeously gory inspiration.
7. Left 4 Dead Spitter
This one freaks me out for two reasons. 1) It's pretty grotesque as far as cosplay goes and 2) According to her Avianna's Facebook page, she made this entire costume in a day and the makeup in two hours. That's a scary amount of talent!
8. Cabin in the Woods Sugarplum Fairy
The extremely talented MissPyramidHead4 turned her little sister into arguably one of the scariest characters in the awesome movie Cabin in the Woods. This is a sugarplum fairy that I want dancing nowhere near my head, thank you very much.
9. Jeff the Killer
This one holds a special place in my heart because the first time I read "Jeff the Killer" on Creepypasta I could barely close my eyes without picturing his creepy porcelain face. I still can't even hover over this image for too long without feeling seriously creeped out. Way to go, Sarcanide! You've officially made it that much harder for me to fall asleep tonight.
Are you feeling particularly creeped out yet? Or maybe cosplay of this caliber is making you feel extra inspired! Either way, I hope everyone can sleep tight tonight.
