Viola Davis was one of the last major casting dominoes to fall when it was announced that she was in final negotiations for the coveted role of Amanda Waller in 2016's Suicide Squad. There were strong rumors suggesting that it was a three-way competition between her, Octavia Spencer, and Oprah Winfrey. Davis emerged victorious, but things had been relatively quiet until recently.
Nerd Report recently caught up with Davis at a movie junket for Blackhat. She took the time to confirm her involvement and explains what attracted her to participate in the upcoming event film.
“Not yet, I have not started reading them [comic books for research] yet. I’ve read up about her but I’m working out my schedule for Suicide Squad...I’m fascinated by her. I’m fascinated by her in this world of superhero-ness because she is not a woman that you would expect. I think that she is a massive contradiction. She’s this big powerful black woman, hard, ready to pick up a gun and shoot anyone at will. I’m fascinated in exploring her psychology, just put it that way. And I’m excited to pick up a gun.”
From Davis' description it sounds as if Waller will most definitely be in on some of the action and not simply barking orders from behind a monitor the entire time. In the modern New 52 incarnation of DC Comics, Waller is sleeker, active, athletic, and definitely packs a sidearm. Judging from who was under casting consideration, it's hard to imagine that she would actually be going on the suicidal mission herself. However, it is easy to imagine a loose cannon member of the squad attacking her or for her installation to be raided.
The fact that she is fascinated by Waller's psychology is a clue that director David Ayer (Fury) has cooked up a well-written role for the Tony winning and Academy nominated actress. Davis has agreed to the role, but she is currently filming her TV show How to Get Away With Murder, and has to fit in both projects.
This is yet another signal that Suicide Squad will be a hard-hitting movie that may own the end of the summer of 2016. Filming is set to begin soon and we will be sure to keep you up to date on its progress. Suicide Squad will be in theaters August 5th, 2016.
