We're all running out of ways to voice our frustrations with the lack of any form of recognition from Bethesda concerning Fallout 4, its development, or release date information for the PC, Xbox One and PS4. Therefore, the fan base has kept one another continuously engaged with the idea of a Fallout 4 release date in many forms. But I'm wondering how fans would feel about a Borderlands or Far Cry 4 style co-op in FE4?
Fallout has always been about a singleplayer experience, but with many developers moving towards the inclusion of multiplayer in order to sustain the lifespan of a title, we could see some multiplayer elements entering Fallout 4. Would this dilute the experience of roaming the wasteland?
Fallout 4 - Far Cry 4 or Borderlands style Co-op on PC, Xbox One & PS4
Now, I'm not saying that Fallout 4 should become a multiplayer game (we've already had the MMO discussion here), but rather just feature a co-op mode. Obviously at this stage we'd all settle for any kind of Fo4 mode though...but seeing as one of the greatest aspects of Far Cry 4 and Borderlands was their addition of co-op, could it work for Bethesda's next game?
Far Cry 4
It's depressing to witness developers complete lack of support for local co-op anymore. Multiplayer has moved to online, but we still enjoy being able to roam a world on the same screen with a friend by our side. In any case, the Far Cry 4 co-op mode is an intriguing one to slot into the Fallout landscape.
In the game, you are introduced to an eccentric side character, one who the second player in co-op takes control of. Imagine this situation in Fallout 4, that we meet someone in the wasteland who serves as the second co-op character. I've issues with this model for sure.
If we were able to join one another in Fallout 4's new setting, we should be able to bring our own character into the world. After all, if a character customisation option is available, the whole purpose of creating them would become redundant once a friend joins us.
But the act of exploring the wasteland with a friend at our side, does it work with this land? Fallout is a very unique experience, one that was even more unique for every individual that played it. We felt as if we were the only person of our kind in this wasteland. If there are other players out there in a similar situation to us, will that undermine our sense of individuality?
Fallout is about discovery and carving your own marks into its world. Besides, its combat was never exactly like Far Cry 4 in that more mayhem = more fun. You always felt like you were just surviving rather than tearing through the countryside. While it can't necessarily hurt Fallout 4 to have co-op, there is one way that it can; blocking content.
If Fallout 4 was to limit certain areas or bunkers to multiplayer only, it would destroy the sense of discovery that this world is famous for. Imagine trekking across the wastelands and knowing that you can't see all of it unless you explore with a friend. I feel like this goes against what makes Fallout special for me personally, am I wrong in saying this?
As the Borderlands series has a similar setting to Fallout, though of course it's tone is very different, it seems like it could be an interesting model for the co-op that would be implemented into Fallout 4. That being said though, I've never been a fan of Borderlands on my own.
If Fallout 4 brought in the option that multiplayer wasn't only limited to one other player but an additional 3, I feel like this would go against everything the game is trying to achieve. That many people running around the wastelands together would seriously feel like...well...Borderlands.
I'm interested to see whether fans of the series would be intrigued by this kind of dynamic. Perhaps you're dying to give the Fallout landscape a try with some of your mates! And I feel that if it's implemented as an optional inclusion that doesn't impact upon the singleplayer campaign, then why not? But what about VATS?
VATS really would not work at all in a co-op situation. It's so different from slow-mo. We were all wondering how Rockstar were going to implement it into Max Payne 3's online mode. They did a wonderful job of incorporating it into moments when players who were looking at someone using it would enter slow-mo too. But that couldn't possibly work with VATS because it stops the gameplay.
You'd be forced to shoot at an enemy that your friend would be aiming at or maybe wait till he was done with the monster. Otherwise we'd just see a creature standing still in the middle of the battlefield because he was being targeted. So, if multiplayer came to Fallout 4, it would have to seriously change the shooting dynamic. And is that something that you'd want? It wouldn't really be Fallout multiplayer at all then.
So Fallout fans, what do you think? Would you like co-op to be implemented into the world of Fallout 4, is this the kind of inclusion you want on its release date? Or do you think it should stay singleplayer when it comes out on PC, Xbox One and PS4? Let us know in the comments!
