There's nothing like the discovery of a substance originally considered purely mythical to generate heated discussion amongst fans of the obscure and supernatural... especially if that find points towards the ancient sunken metropolis of Atlantis...

Divers investigating a wreck have found Atlantian metal

Discovery News reports that workers off the coast of Sicily, Italy explored a shipwreck dating from the 6th Century. They found 39 ingots of orichalcum, the legendary metal of the lost underwater city of Atlantis.

What is orichalcum, exactly?

Orichalcum is a metal spoken of in ancient writings, and fantasy books and games in more recent times. It was thought to be a mythical or otherwise undefined alloy of metals. Analysis of the ingots revealed orichalcum to be a mix of 75% copper, 20% zinc and a smattering of nickel, iron and lead.

Orichalcum is familiar to many fantasy fans

The metal alloy, until recently thought to be entirely fictitious or lost to posterity, flourishes in alternate universes and fantastical gaming. It's the power source in Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis, and orichalcum ingots are a stalwart of massive series' like Final Fantasy and Skyrim.

So... what does this find mean?

Experts are not sure, exactly, what this find means. Whether or not it points to the existence of Atlantis, the recovery of a hitherto undiscovered hoard of ancient metal alloy is a staggering historical find. Sicilian Sea Office representative Sebastiano Tuso says,

Nothing similar has ever been found. We knew orichalcum from ancient texts... It will provide us with precious information.

Divers continue to investigate the wreck and its strange contents... do you think that we will eventually uncover Atlantis?

Do you think that Atlantis exists?
