As a huge fan of the original [REC], and a slightly less huge fan of the sequels, I have to say I am still rather excited for [REC]4: Apocalypse, even if the underlying conceit of the franchise has perhaps run on a little too far.
Today, we've got a new clip showing us some of what will go down in this fourth edition of the series, directed by Jaume Balagueró. Unlike some horror movie promotion clips, which decide to just show off a boring piece of dialogue, [REC]4 does it different by showing the lovely Angela fleeing a horde of the infected before the boat she's on goes all explodey. Check it out below:
The young reporter Ángela is rescued from the building and taken to an oil tanker to be examined. However, it is unbeknown to the soldiers that she carries the seed of the mysterious demonic virus.
As you can see, [REC]4 has done away with the found footage style which made the original film so popular. I think this might be both a blessing and a curse. It was clear by the second [REC] film that justifying the found footage style was becoming increasingly difficult and ridiculous (I mean helmet cameras I can handle, but kids with a camcorder? Come on!).
On the flip side, the realism of the first [REC] film's camera style is what made it so attractive to horror fans who already thought the genre had run its course. Without it, there is a risk [REC] could become just another running and screaming generic horror.
If you do like what you see, well you're in luck. [REC]4: Apocalypse made its way on Amazon Instant on January 2nd. So, you can watch it now!
