We all long for the day that we see The Last of Us 2 is confirmed by Naughty Dog (though it is one of those games with an ending that I desperately don't want to see ruined by a sequel). Therefore, until its official release date for PS4, we'll have a lot of speculating to do about what the plot will be. But could it feature Joel as the villain?
Naturally, there will be a great number of spoilers in this here article, so if you haven't played all of The Last of Us (what's wrong with you?!?!?!) I suggest you don't read ahead. This is one game you really don't want ruined for you!
The Last of Us 2 - Joel as the Villain
The conclusion to The Last of Us will go down in video gaming history. It presented us with a moment where we as the audience were tasked with engaging with the material and drawing our own conclusions. Every human being has a darker side. Every human being has a breaking point.
The loss of Joel's daughter and then the near loss of his surrogate one, Ellie, was too much for him to bare. He wasn't going to let that happen again. He's not the kind of 'hero' that one generally confronts in a popular art form. His decision's were flawed and painfully human. His love for Ellie is what kept her alive, but endangered the rest of the human race.
What a powerful and evocative moment it was to see Ellie confronted with his lie and say "Okay." With such a tremendous success behind them, Naughty Dog are sure to return to this world with The Last of Us 2. But could this broken man really be the villain?
I am one for thinking about The Last of Us...a lot. Therefore, plot speculations are past time that takes place in between many activities. But mostly while listening to Gustavo Santaollala's breathtaking score. What kind of story could fit this world again? What sort of story deserves this kind of music? And should Ellie and Joel's chapter be closed?
If Joel and Ellie were to feature in The Last of Us 2, then it should not be as protagonists. I feel that an outside party, impacted by the decisions of these two would be far more appropriate. There are two different ways that I could see this happening. Obviously this isn't the definitive version of The Last of Us that I'm conjuring up here, therefore I'd love to hear alternative theories that you yourselves may have!
Option 1 gives you the opportunity to play as a member of the Fireflies. One who is tasked with taking down Joel and removing Ellie from his protection. Therefore, the initial plan can go ahead and they can develop the vaccine with Ellie's aid.
Would Ellie want to go along with them? Perhaps she would decide out of free will and have to break it to Joel that she was going to help the fireflies. Perhaps Joel would get in the way of the procedure and would become the villain of the game. Personally, I'm not too happy with this idea, as it features Joel and Ellie too much.
An additional idea that could be possible is that there is a small family surviving out in the wilderness. It's a few years later and they were promised that a vaccine was being created (the one that Joel stopped from happening). They live in waiting of this day, hearing of an awful event that occurred when the procedure was attempted with a young girl.
After embarking on their own journey for some time (the majority of the game), they come across two travellers; Joel and Ellie. They manage to form an alliance, much to Joel's dismay. They become friendly with Ellie, who steadily grows further and further away from the protective Joel. Eventually, the family uncover the fact that Ellie is the one that was to bring about the cure.
They learn of Joel's involvement and help Ellie in escaping, so as to get her to the fireflies. Joel becomes the villain of the story as he tracks the family looking to save the one that he loves.
With my idea aside, I'd love to hear what people want to see from The Last of Us 2! Do you want the story to pick up right after the moment on the hill with Joel and Ellie or go off somewhere completely different? Let us know in the comments! Happy gaming!
