David O. Russell, the director behind critically acclaimed films such as American Hustle, Silver Linings Playbook, and The Fighter is currently one of the biggest and brightest filmmakers in Hollywood. Naturally, he didn't reach that level of success without some bumps in his career path. One of those bumps is a pretty crazy story involving his 2008 political comedy Nailed, currently titled Accidental Love.

Way back in 2007, Russell embarked on the project formerly known as Nailed. His cast included some really stellar talent including Jake Gyllenhaal, Jessica Biel, James Marsden, Bill Hader. After fnishing filming most of the movie in 2010, the financial backer didn't hold up his end of the bargain leading much of the cast and crew to, understandably, leave set.

While Russell apparently championed for the movie to be finished for a few years, he officially took his name off the film in 2010 and replaced it with the pseudonym Stephen Greene. After leaving the project Russell stated:

The circumstances under which the film would now be completed are much different on several fundamental levels than when we embarked several years ago.
I, unfortunately, am no longer involved in the project and cannot call it ‘my’ film.

Pretty unfortunate for everyone considering Russell has since brought us so much Oscar worthy movies and really established himself as a fantastic filmmaker. Even more unfortunate for the film's distributor Millennium Entertainment who can't technically call it a David O. Russell film anymore.

Even so, Millennium Entertainment will release the movie on-demand, so fans of the director can still enjoy seeing some of Russell's earlier work.

Here is the official synopsis of the movie:

Formerly known as Nailed (David O. Russell), Accidental Love tells the story of a small town waitress (Biel), who accidentally gets a nail lodged in her head as her boyfriend (Marsden) attempts his marriage proposal. Her predicament leads her on a journey to Washington DC, where she meets a dashing but clueless congressman (Gyllenhaal), who might be able to help her unusual case.
Will their blossoming romance survive the cut-throat politics of the Capital? With an all-star cast that also includes Catherine Keener, Tracy Morgan, James Brolin and Paul Reuben. Accidental Love is the funny story of what happens when sparks fly and love interferes with what you stand for.

While I will admit that the plot sounds slightly convoluted, I have faith in the cast and director. This could make a really interesting underdog story! Check out the official trailer for Accidental Love below:

This is just proof that Hollywood isn't as easy as it appears. It also makes me wonder what other unfinished projects are out there!

I don't think it matters whether you watch Accidental Love because you're a fan of David O. Russell, the cast, or the controversy. But I do think that this is a really interesting story of filmmaking that could be worthy of some attention.

Accidental Love will be released on-demand on February 10th, 2015.

Are you going to see Jake Gyllenhaal and Jessica Biel in David O. Russell's lost film?
