No surprise at the box office as "Taken 3" TAKES the box office by storm with a solid 40.4 million opening. Well above all expectations but the jury is still out on this film and if it will have strong legs or not. Expanding and reaching #2 this week is "Selma" with a decent 11.2 mil and positive word-of-mouth. Holding ground at #3 is "Into the Woods" with 9.8 million and just crossing the 100 mil cume mark. Drop to #4 is "The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies" with another 9.4 mil and well over the 225 mark, should hit 250 sooner than later. Rounding off the top 5 is "Unbroken" with 8.4 mil and it also just crossed the 100 mil cum mark as we are now officially into full Award Season with the Golden Globes this evening.
New movies next week:
We have three new movies opening this weekend and one expansion coming on board. With about 3000 screens, "Paddington" based on the children's classic book. Shows some solid response and could open with a solid 15 mil in this Winter season. Up next on about 2800+ screens in the comedy "The Wedding Ringer" and could do well with a potential 15+ mil to open. On the more serious side with about 2400 screen is "Blackhat." Looks to be an OK film and could open to around 10 mil. Expanding to over 3200 screens is "American Sniper" and current reviews are good on this one. Could hit at least 40 mil to open and be an easy candidate for the 100 mil cume club!
