The recent trailer and Entertainment Weekly profile gave us our first good looks at Evangeline Lilly in the upcoming [Ant-Man](movie:9048). Those familiar with the Ant-Man's history have long suspected that Lilly could end up being the beloved Wasp - the partner of original Ant-Man, Dr. Hank Pym, who gave her the power to shrink down to insect size and fitted her with some cool bio-implanted wings.
But when it was revealed that Lilly's character goes by the name Hope van Dyne, and that she plays Hank Pym's daughter - it only raised more questions. While the Wasp goes by Janet van Dyne in the comics there's a certain Hope Pym that ends up causing all sorts of problems for the Avengers in the Marvel Comic Universe.
Hope Pym is one of those rebellious daughters who ends up seeking revenge against the Avengers and what she sees as their betrayal of her father's legacy. She even goes on to start her own group of misfits called The Revengers.
The most recent Ant-Man details do indeed refer to Hank Pym, played by Michael Douglas in the film, as "as founding member of the Avengers". How they explain that and go into the history of the "Avengers Initiative" could open some interesting doors in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. With [Marvel's Agent Carter](series:1119765) currently exploring Marvel's deep past, could there be more period pieces on the way?
While names can always be a bit cheeky in these Marvel movies, perhaps the real clues lie in the Marvel's meticulous character design.
Janet van Dyne as the Wasp is certainly familiar to those who may have caught the recent Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes cartoon. She's featured prominently in the show and sports a short haircut - not too dissimilar to the bob-cut that Evangeline Lilly is wearing in Ant-Man.
So there are two tantalizing ways the Marvel movies could go with Evangeline Lilly's character. We know there's going to be a big roster shake up ahead for [The Avengers](movie:9040) - could it be that the Wasp is being primed to take her rightful place in the next lineup? Or will we see a fallen Hank Pym in the near future followed by a revenge seeking daughter?
