In the words of a college professor I had for many years, "The Austin Powers films are some of the smartest, most hilarious movies ever made in the history of filmmaking." I didn't, and still don't, disagree with that brilliant man. One of the best things about the three spy spoofs is that they're all pretty great! That's a near impossible feat for any trilogy (minus Toy Story, of course).

Furthermore, they include a few of Mike Myers best comedic roles. If you don't laugh at these characters I'm convinced you have no sense of humor. I mean, c'mon.

Austin Powers

"Yeah, baby, yeah!"

Dr. Evil

"You know, I have one simple request. And that is to have sharks with frickin' laser beams attached to their heads! Now evidently my cycloptic colleague informs me that that cannot be done. Ah, would you remind me what I pay you people for, honestly? Throw me a bone here!"

Fat Bastard

"Get in my belly!"

I often wonder what was left on the cutting room floor for the movies I love. All of that footage that could have turned the story in a number of different directions, all to be hidden away in the shadows of time.

We know that in the official ending of Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery Austin and Vanessa get married and all ends well (minus Dr.Evil getting away)...or so we think. It segues into the sequel Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me where Austin finds that Vanessa Kensington has actually been one of Dr. Evil's Fembots the whole time! *Gasp*

For years that was the only ending I ever knew, and I was pretty okay with it. But then I saw these bad boys (aka alternate endings) on Reddit yesterday.

These two alternate endings for the first installment in the series, Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery were axed at the end of the day and I can say with absolute confidence that I'm glad it ended the way it did. Check them out to see how differently the classic spy spoof could have ended.

Alternate Ending 1

So, as the Redditor Mcraamu astutely comments:

Apparently the screenplay writers forgot they were making a parody of James Bond movies, and just tried ending it like a James Bond movie.

Too right you are, Mcraamu. This ending was okay, but not amazing. All ends well for Austin and Vanessa while Basil Exposition kind of plays the third wheel. They make out in a life raft. Fade to black. The end. But hey, Elizabeth Hurley in a bikini so...there's that!

Alternate Ending 2

In the second scrapped ending Basil narrates what ends up happening to each of the characters. This obviously had to be cut because it completely contradicts what happens in the following movie.

While I can say that I enjoyed watching these alternate endings, I'm really glad that they kept the ending they have today. They both just seemed kind of lackluster and would have undercut the overall tone of hilarity throughout the movie. Good job, filmmakers! You guys made a great decision.

What did you guys think of these alternate endings? Did you prefer either of them to what ended up making it on screen? Please let me know in the comments, you groovy cats.
