Confession time: When I was a kid I totally had crushes on animated characters. After scouring the Internet for a quick minute I learned that I was not alone.
If you've been hiding your secret childhood fictional crushes, this is a safe, judgement free zone for you to express your love. To entice you all, I offer up my list of male cartoon characters I thought were cute as a kid.
*Disclaimer: This list is just of my personal crushes so they're all male. Sorry, boys and girls. If there's enough demand I will happily enlist one of my coworkers to create their own list of fictional ladies.
1. Peter Pan, Peter Pan
Wendy Darling, I am with you. This boy was adventurous, showed leadership skills, and he could freakin' fly! One time at Disneyland when I was probably six I thought the Peter Pan character waved at me during the parade and I talked about it for months. My crush on Peter Pan may have later contributed to my love of musical theater and men in musical theater. Those tights, man.
2. Tuxedo Mask, Sailor Moon
Tuxedo Mask (Darien/Mamoru) was dark, mysterious and always there to help out, or try to help out, his girlfriend Sailor Moon (Serena/Usagi). And when he's playing his alter ego role he's always around to make fun of Serena by calling her goofy little terms of endearment like "dumpling head" or "meatball head." What a doll. Not to mention, he was a very sharp dresser, at least for the 90s.
3. Roger Radcliffe, 101 Dalmatians
Roger is everything. He's an adorkable creative songwriter who loves animals. and has a British accent. He's also a family man and has proven to stand up for what he believes in. I've gone out with guys who had a lot less than that.
4. Simba, The Lion King
I-...I don't really know how to explain this one. I've already gotten some flak from my coworkers about this, so please, someone tell me I'm not alone. Was it the bangs? Was it Jonathan Taylor Thomas' voice? Maybe it was because he was pretty much the only male-ish figure in my five-year-old life other than my dad. It's confusing, but a very real thing for me.
5. Zuko, Avatar: The Last Airbender
Zuko was the perfect animated crush for any girl who believes she can change a man. Sure, when the series started out he was the main antagonist and pretty much a huge jerk, but his story unfolded beautifully to show that beneath that scarred face he was just a scared boy trying to prove himself. He then ended up joining the good team by befriending Ang, Katara, and Sokka. Also, scars can be kinda hot.
6. Prince Eric, The Little Mermaid
This is an absolute no-brainer for which I feel no shame. Prince Eric was a total babe! Last year I wrote a post about real-life Disney princes and I compared him to Matt Bomer. Since there's no denying that Matt Bomer is basically a physically perfect specimen of man, I thus conclude that Prince Eric is his equally flawless cartoon version. End of story.
7. Dimitri, Anastasia
I think that Dimitri being voiced by John Cusack has something to do with this. There must be some kind of mental link I've created between John Cusack's heatthrob roles in the 80s and this cartoon character. Dimitri was the one who saved Anya in the first place, so even when he was a con man you knew he really had a heart of gold the whole time. Plus he can sing, dance, and has that swoopy hair that I'm a total sucker for.
Am I crazy or were (are?) these animated dudes kind of babes?
Either way, it's your turn! Let me know in the comments section which fictional men or women (or lions) you not-at-all-weirdly had crushes on.
