Fans of The Purge franchise rejoice - a third is installment is definitely happening, but we might have to wait a little longer than we expected.
It had long been rumored that Universal Studios had plans for a third film, so it was no surprise when Horror producers Blumhouse last week confirmed the news over Twitter:
What was surprising, however, was that we'd have to wait until next summer to see it.
The first Purge, set in Los Angeles on the one night of the year when crime is legalized, did much to revitalize a genre which, at the time, was regarded by some as being dominated by the Paranormal Activity and Saw franchises.
Its success was quickly capitalized upon and a second installment, The Purge: Anarchy, was released last year in 2014, just a year after the release of the original.
The reason behind the added wait between movies this time around remains unclear, as do the plot details.
The first film's action focused on the home of a wealthy family, whereas the second brought the action to the streets in a more urban setting. With this in mind, fans have speculated that we might see a bigger clash between the two social classes in the third installment.
Director James DeMonaco told DigitalSpy:
"The two ideas we've kicked around - and it may be one of these two things, it may be something totally different - one of the things I'd like to explore is the first year The Purge took place, and what people did then. Another thing I'd like to explore is the revolutionaries who are against The Purge, and maybe do a movie about them."
