It's been almost 12 years since the first movie of the swash-buckling franchise was released back in 2003. Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl introduced us to one of the greatest adventures on the high-seas, unleashing the jaw-dropping action of the Caribbean and bringing us a myriad of excellent performances.

Here's a trailer to remind you how fantastic the first installment really was:

We have really grown to love the roguish trickster Captain Jack Sparrow, the spirited Elizabeth Swann, dreamboat Will Turner, the dastardly Barbossa and powdered wig-wearing Commodore Norrington. And rightly-so for most of the actors, the movie franchise sky-rocketed them into superstardom, making them some of most recognizable faces in Hollywood.

From Johnny Depp to Keira Knightley, Geoffrey Rush and Orlando Bloom, to Zoe Saldana, let's take a look at the cast of Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl and see what they are up to today.

Johnny Depp as Captain Jack Sparrow

Fun Fact: Depp took much inspiration from Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards for his swash-buckling character, saying "pirates were the rock stars of their day."

Where are they now?

Since receiving his first Academy Award nomination for reprising the role of odd-ball Captain Jack Sparrow, Depp has continued to rake in even more box office success and is now considered one of the world's highest paid movie stars. In particular, his collaborations with close pal Tim Burton on movies such as Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Alice in Wonderland and Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street have made him renown for taking on darker roles. He also received critical acclaim for Finding Neverland and Public Enemies, making him one of the biggest names in Hollywood.

Keira Knightley as Elizabeth Swann

Fun Fact: Keira Knightley almost didn't make it to the audition because of a traffic jam. And when she DID get the part, she was so convinced of getting fired after a few days of working on the movie that she only packed a few things to bring with her when she started filming.

Where are they now?

After wrapping the first Pirates of the Caribbean, Knightley went on to star in King Arthur, as well as in a new adaptation of Pride and Prejudice, for which she received a Golden Globe and Academy Award nomination. She also earned high praise for her performances in the heart-wrenching Atonement and costume drama The Duchess. Her face has also adorned thousands of billboards worldwide as the face of Chanel's luxury campaigns! Check her out:

Orlando Bloom as Will Turner

Fun Fact: Apparently, the producers were totally stuck between Heath Ledger, James McAvoy and Orlando Bloom for the role of Will Turner. In the end, they went for Bloom because he was also in the Lord of the Rings trilogy.

Where are they now?

Since his breakthrough roles in the first chapters of Lord of the Rings and Pirates of the Caribbean, Bloom has continued to be an absolute babe and to win over our hearts in many other epic blockbusters. He starred in Troy and Kingdom of Heaven and was the lead in Elizabethtown, which won him great recognition. In private, he's really into doing good-deeds and became a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador in 2009. He also has a kid with style icon and sexiest woman EVER Miranda Kerr. Too bad she's now his ex-wife.

Geoffrey Rush as Captain Barbossa

Fun Fact: Rush created his own backstory for his character so he could understand better what made Barbossa tick. He said:

"I put together this story together that when he was about thirteen, Barbossa ran away to sea because he came from a background of poverty. And he would have been on ships where he would have seen very grand cabins and the captains living in spacious and elegant quarters. And he thought, that's where I want to be." (Source)

In preparation, he also spent hours perfecting his pirate's accent with a dialect coach.

Where are they now?

Australian Rush was already a legend when he began filming Pirates of the Caribbean. In 1996, he had already won an Academy Award for Best Actor for his role in Shine and went on to star in many, many movies - recently, you guys might have also caught him in The King's Speech. He is also one of the few people to win all the acting world's three most prestigious awards, the Academy Award, Tony Award, and Emmy Award. All hail the Rush!

Jack Davenport as Commodore James Norrington

Fun Fact: In the first draft of the script, Norrington is so angered that Elizabeth turns down his marriage proposal that he goes to join Barbossa to take over the Caribbean. Luckily this version was turned down, otherwise the movie would have turned out VERY differently!!

Where are they now?

Since the first Pirates movie, Davenport has continued to star in many great films such as The Boat That Rocked and has been involved in numerous successful TV shows, including FlashForward and musical drama Smash.

Zoe Saldana as Anamaria

Fun Fact: Saldana hated filming the movie so much that she almost quit! Apparently, she got along really well with the other actors but did not like the "political stuff that went on behind closed doors." (Source)

Where are they now?

Well, I'm so glad she didn't throw in the towel because since then, Saldana has had an awesome career in fantasy movies. She's starred in the ultimate epic that was Avatar, was Uhura in Star Trek and absolutely kicked alien ass as Gamora in Guardians of the Galaxy.

Clearly, the Pirates of the Caribbean stars have come such a long way since the first film and their careers continue to gain pace! Let's see where they will be in another 12 years from now...
