I love 24, but most of my love for it comes out of a deep-rooted man crush for Jack 'you probably don’t think that I can force this towel down your throat' Bauer. By the way, he totally can force a towel down your throat, and he totally will if you withhold any information relating to the location of the bomb.
Such is my passion for Jack, you can probably guess at my amazement when Fox CEO Dana Walden suggested they may continue the show without Kiefer Sutherland reprising his lead role! I know, blasphemy right?
That would mean no more of this:
Speaking at the Television Critics Association, Walden said the network may bring 24 back in 2016, but without Bauer:
We have discussed it with him. We talk to Kiefer all the time. He’s a great creative partner, potentially he won’t be in this installment. We’re not sure yet. We’re not that far along, but I know he supports us doing more 24.
Personally, 24 is Jack Bauer to me, and it's hard to imagine the show at all without him. The main recognizable element of the show is its real-time gimmick, so perhaps they could adapt the same concept to a different character, but I'm yet to be convinced if 24 needs to continue at all, especially without Kiefer.
Confusingly, Dana Walden later seemed to double back on her earlier comments, stating:
First of all, we’re not talking about continuing the show without him. We’re talking about whether there’s one installment that he’s not in. I think if the storytelling is exciting enough, that real-time element that the show really owns–so many of the production aspects are so unique to that show–I do [think we could do it without him]. I think [it could be] great characters with that creative team. I look at everyone that’s surrounded Kiefer in the last installment and I think it could work.
So...he will be in it or he won't be? Make your mind up!
Sutherland himself seemed pretty certain on the issue, telling USA Today that he was finished with the show:
My bones are creaking. What am I going to do, Jack Bauer in a walker? So, yeah, this is it. For me, it's done.
Perhaps it is time for fresh blood. What do you guys think?
