Welcome to CROSSOVER WARS! Where we (my nerdy friends and I) pit two characters of similar abilities, from different fictions, against each other to see who the fans on MOVIEPILOT rally behind. To kick off our quest to find the biggest bad asses of fiction, we've chosen the two most iconic wizards in modern pop culture, Gandalf (The Lord of the Rings/ The Hobbit), and Albus Dumbledore (Harry Potter). So without further adieu...
Fight to the death
This showdown takes place assuming that both contenders are fully capable of, and willing to take their opponent's life.
Both fighters are at the peak of their abilities - as described in any and all of their respective literature and film.
One on one
At no point in the confrontation may the contenders call for help from any of their allied forces (Wizard, Muggle, Eagle, or otherwise).
Gandalf the White
- Glamdring (Elvish sword)
- Wizard's Staff
- Ring of Fire: Narya (one of the 20 rings of power)
- Spell breaking and deflection
- Force fields and force blasts
- Versed in physical combat with the sword and staff combination
While Gandalf uses several of his skills and abilities in the films and lore, his true potential powers are never shown. Gandalf is very conservative with his abilities almost as if he is afraid of what he is really capable of. One specific advantage to his abilities being reincarnation. After his battle with the Balrog, he dies as Gandalf the Grey, and is reborn as the more powerful Gandalf the White. While the White Wizards are seen as the most powerful in the lore, what is to say that upon the death of Gandalf the White, that he will not just be sent back again, even stronger, to finish his task of killing Dumbledore.
- Elder Wand (most powerful wand ever created)
- Sword of Gryffindor
Abilities/Common Spells and Curses:
- Alarte Ascendare - launches the target into the air
- Avada Kedavra - instant and painless death
- Crucio - causes extreme pain to the target
- Imperio - gives the caster complete control of the target
- Expelliarmus - disarms the target
Not unlike Gandalf the White, Albus Dumbledore is very conservative with his powers. It is explained that wizards of great power are able to use spells without speaking their commands, making Dumbledore a very unpredictable opponent. While he is not used to combat with swords, as a former member of House Gryffindor, there is a possibility of the sword of Gryffindor presenting itself to Dumbledore. Given that the sword is an inanimate object, it will be counted as exempt from the "allied forces" rule.
The powers of wizards in the Harry Potter world seem to be completely dependent upon the wizard using them. Wizards are completely capable of mixing and matching several different spells, or even creating their own, making Dumbledore's powers very unpredictable.
