Entertainment Weekly reports that Glee alum Melissa Benoist has been cast as Kara Zor-El, better known as Supergirl.

Supergirl will chronicle the life of Kara Zor-El, who escaped Krypton before it's destruction, and came to Earth. Kara will be taken in by the Danvers, who will help her conceal her powers. She will attempt to live a normal life, before she begins to embrace her special abilities and become a hero, much like her cousin, The Man of Steel.

According to HitFix, Supergirl has already been given a series order for next season. Supergirl will be helmed by Greg Berlanti, who has helped Arrow and The Flash transition to television, along with executive producers, Ali Adler and Sarah Schecter.

Benoist tweeted her excitement through a simple message, Benoist says, "I wish there was a superhero emoji." The Flash star Grant Gustin congratulated Benoist and retweeted the news to his followers, while Arrow star, Stephen Amell assured her that her character is in good hands.

Benoist is not the first Glee alum to become a DC Comics hero. Grant Gustin also had a stint on the hit show as evil Warbler, Sebastian Smythe. Is Warner Brothers picking out Glee stars to star in their shows to start a giant DC Comics musical?

Check out Benoist as Marley Rose, who suited up as "Woman Fierce" on Glee.
