Fresh casting news from the director of X-Men: Apocalypse himself, Bryan Singer announced via twitter that the Days of Future Past follow up has found its core of young actors for the roles of the younger Jean Grey, Cyclops, and Storm. Let's get to know them, shall we?
Sophie Turner as Jean Grey
Inspired casting choice?
While Sophie Turner's acting resume shows a lack of experience, she has consistently given great performances as Sansa Stark over the last four seasons of [Game of Thrones](movie:817617). Fortunately, the role of Sansa kind of resonates well with Jean Grey; she starts off shy and naive, and naturally grows into her own becoming confident and developing a strong willed personality. In my opinion, this is the most inspired casting choice the X-Men franchise has made since High Jackman as Wolverine or Patrick Stewart as Professor X.
Tye Sheridan as Cyclops
Is he right for the role?
So where have you seen this actor before? Tye Sheridan was in Tree of Life and Mud, holding his own against the likes of acting juggernauts Brad Pitt and Matthew McConaughey respectively. Other than that, he's pretty much in the same boat as Turner in regards to acting pedigree. Still though, from what I've seen, this young actor might just surprise us all when he takes on the predestined leader of the X-Men. Apparently he blew Singer away during his screen test too.
Alexandra Shipp as Storm
Will Shipp do the character justice?
Alexandra Shipp, like both Tye and Sophie, is very much a relative newcomer to Hollywood shores. Her most recent role was in the ill-fated biopic Aaliyah: The Princess of R&B. While I haven't seen that movie (which aired on the Lifetime network I believe), the poor response it received doesn't instill much confidence that Shipp will do the character justice. She tested well enough to land the role though, so I'm willing to give her a chance.
Our new core of mutants is set! But who did these young actors beat out to land their roles?
Sheridan was up against Taron Egerton ([Kingsman: The Secret Service](movie:713143)) and Jamie Blackley (If I Stay), Turner was testing against Saoirse Ronan (The Grand Budapest Hotel) and Shipp was competing with Zendaya Coleman (Shake It Up).
I really would have preferred Taron Egerton as Cyclops (the guy is awesome in Kingsman and looks pretty much like comic book Scott) and I had also hoped Singer casted Storm a bit older so they could maybe land Lupita Nyong'o, but I can see why they chose Tye and Alexandra. Super excited for Sophie though, as I was rooting for her to be the new Jean Grey. Her reaction on twitter best sums up this casting news:
Sheridan can be seen next in the Sundance film The Stanford Prison Experiment, and Turner continues to appear on HBO’s Game of Thrones, which goes into its fifth season in April. Shipp will be in the upcoming music biopic, Straight Outta Compton.
X-Men: Apocalypse opens in theaters on May 27, 2016.
