This was the movie I was sceptical of, and even though Captain America: The Winter Soldier got me into the MCU, and it was great, Guardians will be my favourite movie...until Age of Ultron. But I've been thinking: why do we love Guardians of The Galaxy? Why is it so great? Well, to kick off my weekly series of 'Why We Love...' I decided to look at Guardians!
5. The Opening
And I thought Spider-Man 3 was stupid. Guys, I don't care about the whole dance scene in Spider-Man 3 because of this. This, just comes out of nowhere. You'd think we'd be seeing Star Lord kicking ass, doing basic action movie stuff. But, what does he do? Dance to Come and Get Your Love. When you watched the movie for the first time, did you even GUESS that would happen? It almost makes you forget you're watching a Marvel movie! It's like in the Captain America TV movie from the 90's where that guy shots 'Heil Hitler' before killing Howard Stark! Yeah, that movie sucked, but why do we love this moment? Well, we haven't seen these guys on film before. The mainstream audience probably didn't hear about the Guardians comics! And this is their introduction to their protagonist: A spaceman who dances on an abandoned planet with a badass set of guns that resemble Plasma pistols from Halo. They loved it, they still do, and so do we.
4. The Interaction Between The Team
Again, a mainstream audience barely heard of these guys before the movie. And we love the characters because of their interactions. Remember the original Star Wars trilogy? The characters kept us interested because of the interactions and the personalities they had. Star-Lord is like Han Solo. He's a smart, handsome, tough guy that pilots an epic spaceship. Han pilots The Millennium Falcon and Quill pilots The Milano. Gamora is Princess Leia. She is in some cases the damsel in distress, but she isn't afraid to get into a fight and kick some ass. Groot is Chewbacca. Chewbacca can only roar, and Groot can only say three words that makes the conversations hilarious. Need I say more? Rocket and Drax? They are the original duo. They don't resemble Luke Skywalker, C-3PO, R2-D2 or Lando Calrissian. They are original and both have motives that you want them to succeed in. Drax wants to kill Ronan for the death of his wife and daughter and Rocket starts off wanting the bounty, but in the end just wants to be a better person/raccoon.
3. The Story
I don't think this was based off the comics. James Gunn literally managed to make something memorable, simple and compelling without really trying. That's it, I got nothing else. Next one.
2. Rocket & Groot
I thought this was going to be stupid. Admit it, so did you. But somehow...it isn't. Groot was recently proclaimed to be the 'Greatest Hero of The 21st Century' and him and Rocket's bromance is just amazing. I could see a Rocket & Groot solo film totally happening. The idea of a talking raccoon and a tree in a movie sounds so ridiculous, even for Marvel, but it works. I mean we did have Howard The Duck before this. Which I am still scarred for life by.
AND THE NUMBER ONE REASON WE LOVE GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY IS...
1. It's Originality
From start to finish, Guardians of The Galaxy is something different. Something new. It pays homage to the space operas of the past and reminds us why we loved films like Star Wars, Flash Gordon, Terminator and why we still do. It's unique, funny, charming and brilliant. And it makes me want Guardians 2 even sooner!
