Chances are you were beaming with joy at the end of the Guardians of the Galaxy movie. But if you were like me you may have also been wondering, "How the heck are they going to bring these characters into the main Avengers MCU world?"
Well, true believers, if there is one character that can do it it's Mantis. And we may have already gotten more than a couple looks at her in the trailers for [The Avengers: Age Of Ultron](movie:293035).
Actress Claudia Kim is seen hanging with the Avengers crew when Ultron totally gate crashes the party and proceeds to bum everyone out. From the looks of it, this get together appears to be a Superheroes Only type event and all signs point to Kim being the new superhero on the block.
The character of Mantis isn't Korean, as Kim is, but is Vietnamese - actually half-German half-Vietnamese (the character was created in 1973). More importantly, the character has a ton of connections to the Avengers (card-carrying member), Ultron, Vision, Klaw, and those Maximoff kids - Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver. Seeing as all of these folks are represented in Avengers 2, could Mantis be far behind?
Even MORE importantly than that, though, and perhaps the biggest reason for the character to appear, is to make the Avengers - Guardians of the Galaxy connection. You see, in the comic books, after the fall of Ultron, Mantis joins the Guardian squad in a bit of a managerial position. Her telepathic and plant related powers allow for communication with Groot - so she's especially qualified.
One of the things the Marvel movies have been great at is getting the look just right. For instance, when Andy Serkis showed up in the Avengers 2 trailer - many immediately knew he was Klaw because they absolutely nailed the look. And if you ask me, they've found a spot-on Mantis with Claudia Kim.
Now the question arises - is this mystery woman in the most recent trailer a look at Mantis' origin story?
Mantis spent most of her younger years being trained in the martial arts and developing her psychic abilities and supernatural connection with plant-life - which might explain the bald head and robe she's seen with? It certainly isn't completely clear but it still makes the most sense.
Well, if you were like me and wondering how the [Guardians of the Galaxy](movie:424073) might get to rub shoulders with the Avengers, seeing Mantis show up sheds a lot of light on that question. What do you think? Half-right? Totally wrong? Take to the comments!
