This weekend, Portland celebrated its love of comics, TV, movies and entertainment in general with its own personal Comic Con - Wizard World 2015! And Moviepilot was amazing enough to send me there, to enjoy the festivities and get a first-hand look at one of my favorite subjects: talented fans giving back with awesome works of art and cosplay!

And these fans were amazing enough to talk to me, and tell me a little about their cosplay projects, and how much it means to them.

It's a truth of the con industry that without the fans, there would be no conventions, and nobody to adore the creative works that bring us our favorite characters. I love the dedication, love and plentiful brilliance that fans display, and think they need to be shown some love in return.

So enjoy the first part of my (at least) two-part article series, Humans Of Comic Con: Portland Wizard World edition!

First up, it's someone I know you'll recognize, the incomparable Mr. Spock! Original flavor. This guy is actually a professional Spock lookalike, touring around the country, doing cons and events, and basically being amazing. He stayed in-character wonderfully when interacting with me and other con-goers eager for a photo (and let me tell you, this was one busy man), and even has the Nimoy voice impressively down. (The picture doesn't really do justice, but he's also quite tall. Like really tall. It just added to the cool.)

Live long and prosper, sir!

Name: “Spock Vegas"
Character: Spock - Star Trek: The Original Series

  • 1) Why did you pick this character to cosplay?
Cause I heard I looked like Nimoy.

  • 2) How do you feel when you’re in this costume?
It is a great honor to represent Spock’s spirit.

  • 3) If you could say one thing to the character you’re cosplaying, what would it be?
Always remember to live long and prosper.

  • 4) If you weren’t playing this character today, who else would you like to play and why?
Bumblebee - cause kids love him.

  • 5) Is there anything else you would like to share about cosplay?
Cons are amazing, like Halloween every weekend.

Next, this lovely lady was actually the first cosplayer I saw on Saturday, and I knew I had to look no further for an awesome interview. (She had an awesome friend with her who will be in part 2 of this article series - I don't want to spoil the surprise!)

She's not bad! She's just drawn that way!

Name: Carolyn H.
Character: Jessica Rabbit - Who Framed Roger Rabbit

  • 1) Why did you pick this character to cosplay?
Nostalgia. I saw this movie as a kid and loved Jessica’s character.

  • 2) How do you feel when you’re in this costume?
    Quite sexual! =)

  • 3) If you could say one thing to the character you’re cosplaying, what would it be?
I know you aren’t really bad. You’re just drawn that way!

  • 4) If you weren’t playing this character today, who else would you like to play and why?
Madoka from Madoka Magica! I want to be a magical girl!

  • 5) Is there anything else you would like to share about cosplay?
Cosplay is a great way to meet other people with a common interest. I would happily encourage everyone to try it. Thank you! =)

Now this next guy was amazing. He's the most convincing Captain Jack I've seen in a long time - and he stayed perfectly in-character the entire time we talked! He's got his gestures and mannerisms down, and I love the commitment and dedication.

Savvy?

Name: Mike V.
Character: Captain Jack Sparrow - Pirates of the Caribbean

  • 1) Why did you pick this character to cosplay?
Someone once said I bear some resemblance to Captain Jack

  • 2) How do you feel when you’re in this costume?
The look on peoples’ faces is more thrilling than any feeling on Earth

  • 3) If you could say one thing to the character you’re cosplaying, what would it be?
    Can I be your stand-in?

  • 4) If you weren’t playing this character today, who else would you like to play and why?
    I only do Jack

  • 5) Is there anything else you would like to share about cosplay?
Cosplay is about making others smile!

This group coming up was a treat. I love finding cosplayers who are a little out of the ordinary, and this trio proved that outstanding cosplay is for grown-ups just as much as the younglings. Rock on!

We're all mad here!
We're all mad here!

Name: (None given. It is a mystery!)

  • 5) Is there anything else you would like to share about cosplay?
Queen: My basement is a craft factory, so we’re always making interesting things down there!

And lastly, a cosplayer I've known for a while, and was really glad to see her here. She always does an amazing job, and her love and dedication to her craft and the characters she portrays is amazing. Say hello to Black Canary!

Kick some butt, lady!
Kick some butt, lady!

Name: Sarah A. S.
Character: Black Canary - DC Comics/Arrow

  • 1) Why did you pick this character to cosplay?
I chose Black Canary for two reasons - the first is because I love her because she's a boss, and secondly I chose this version of Black Canary specifically because this is the version from "Arrow" and several of the cast members were due to appear at this con. Also, because my best friend came to visit me and she cosplays Oliver.

  • 2) How do you feel when you’re in this costume?
Being in this costume makes me feel powerful. I loved her character in the show and emulating someone so powerful makes me feel like I can combat anything....including the sometimes skeevy looks I get when I wear it.

  • 3) If you could say one thing to the character you’re cosplaying, what would it be?
I would probably tell her "Thank you for always fighting for what you believe to be true.” .....and also "Rest In Peace" caaaaause she's kinda dead.....

  • 4) If you weren’t playing this character today, who else would you like to play and why?
Well....there's a list. But right now the number one thing on my mind is Sakura Haruno from the final epilogue chapter of the Naruto series. Naruto is the series that really first pushed me into going to conventions and cosplaying and Sakura's growth throughout the series is something I've always related to.

  • 5) Is there anything else you would like to share about cosplay?
Cosplay is a world I never expected to enter, and it's one that I don't see myself leaving anytime soon. I have made so many amazing connections through this art - a testament to that is my best friend who literally just flew 1000 miles from LA to come do this with me. To me, there is nothing more organic and beautiful than a bunch of nerds all in one place dressed up like their favorite characters and bonding over their fandoms.
