Back in the '90s, Nicole Kidman and Tom Cruise were the most high-profile Hollywood sweethearts on the planet. Before you read on, remind yourself of how fantastic they are with the Eyes Wide Shut trailer:
Since divorcing in 2001, the ex-lovers have graciously put their heartbreak to rest. Yet now, arriving on a wild trail of speculation and high expectations at the 2015 Sundance Film Festival this year, Alex Gibney's controversial documentary Going Clear: Scientology and the Prison of Belief brings their former relationship back into the spotlight, causing a stir with some rather shocking claims...
What is this documentary?
Going Clear is an eye-opening exploration of the infamous Church of Scientology, which is known for attracting so much celebrity support over the years. Apparently, the screening was such a scathing expose of the organization that the Church hired over 160 lawyers to combat allegations made by the film!
So where do Nicole Kidman and Tom Cruise come into this?
Well, Going Clear makes some startling accusations about its most high-profile member Tom Cruise, who has been an outspoken advocate of Scientology since the '90s.
In particular, the film puts forward some seriously juicy claims that the Church intimidated Cruise to split from Kidman. But WHY!?
Apparently, Scientology head David Miscavige was very suspicious of Cruise's wife because her father was a well-respected psychologist back in Australia and of course, Scientology is VERY against psychology. As retaliation, Kidman's father was blacklisted and labeled as a "Potential Trouble Source." If you're a bit confused, trust me you're not the only one. Here's a definition generously provided by the Church:
“A person who is in some way connected to and being adversely affected by a suppressive person.”
Oh what a trouble-maker! I'm practically quaking in my boots...
Among these claims, Going Clear also suggests that between 1992 and 2001, the Church of Scientology was convinced that Kidman strived to distance Cruise from the organization. And why did they think that, you might ask? Well, there is a very simple reason behind this, which is that during the filming of Eyes Wide Shut, Cruise wasn't answering best buddy Miscavige's calls.
Sounds just like a case of a clingy boyfriend, if you ask me...
The Church of Scientology attempted to undermine the relationship
Marty Rathbun, a former high ranking official within the Church, discloses that on Miscavige's orders, he was "to facilitate the breakup" to free Cruise from Kidman's possessive grip over her husband.
One of the tactics used was the wire-tapping of Kidman's phone and the sending of the tapes to Miscavige. Cruise was also supposedly forced to partake in psychoanalysis on his old pal's orders. And what was discovered? Rathbun claims that the Church's head aggressively accused Cruise for having "perverted" sexual fantasies! WOAH!
Finally, Rathbun makes claims in the film that the Church tried to turn Cruise's adopted children with Kidman against their own mother! Surely that's taking it a bit too far...?
So why has Cruise stuck with Scientology?
Clearly, the choice between the organization and Kidman was really, reaaaally tough for Cruise... but you can't take an obedient slave away from its master!
Since the turbulent divorce, Cruise has upped his involvement with the Scientology and has even become its de facto Hollywood spokesman. In return, the Church showers Cruise with admiration and gifts, often buying him luxury airplanes and expensive cars.
Naturally, Cruise has refused to make any kind of statement.
Finally, here we have a documentary that that has dared to breach the impossible and say what we have all been speculating for years!
The film is due to air on HBO later this year. Watch this space!
Do you think Scientology was responsible for the breakup?
