"Life is like a box of chocolates." said our beloved Forrest, "You Never know which one you're going to get." The same could be said of movies, I suppose.

But 11 years later, when we sit down and press play on Forrest Gump, we know EXACTLY what we're going to get: one of the sweetest, saddest, funniest movies of all time.

The film tells the story of nice guy but slow-witted Forrest Gump (Tom Hanks) who, thanks to his supportive mother (Sally Field), leads an extraordinary life: dominating on the gridiron as a college football star, fighting in Vietnam, running thousands of miles and captaining a shrimp boat!

The film is as great as it is tragic, and it goes about explaining the concepts of life and death in ways no parent ever could.

Here's what the cast have been up to since its release!

Tom Hanks as Forrest Gump

What else can I see him in? The Da Vinci Code (2006); Saving Private Ryan (1998); The Green Mile (1999).

Fun fact: Although it's hard to imagine anyone but Hanks playing Forrest, Bill Murray, John Travolta and Chevy Chase all turned down the role. Travolta has since admitted that he made a mistake.

Robin Wright as Jenny Curran

What else can I see her in? House of Cards (2013); The Princess Bride (1987); The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (2011)

Fun fact: The disease Jenny is dying of at the end of the film was probably HIV. She says in the movie that the doctors do not know what the virus is and that they can do nothing about it. We see throughout the film that Jenny could be susceptible to the disease: IV drug use and unprotected sex with many partners.

Gary Sinise as Lieutenant Dan Taylor

What else can I see him in? Mission to Mars (2000); Apollo 13 (1995); CSI: NY (2004)

Fun fact: Inspired by his character, Gary Sinise co-founded a rock and roll cover band during the mid-2000s called "The Lt. Dan Band."

Mykelti Williamson as Benjamin Buford "Bubba" Blue

What else can I see him in? Con Air (1997); Heat (1995); Lucky Number Slevin (2006)

Fun fact: Forrest and Dan's Shrimp Emporium "Bubba Gump," is now a real-life themed restaurant chain. They have 33 locations around the world.

Sally Field as Mrs. Gump

What else can I see her in? Lincoln (2012); Mrs. Doubtfire (1993); The Amazing Spider-Man (2012)

Fun fact: Despite the fact she plays his mother in the film, Sally Field is only ten years older than Tom Hanks.
