There is a lot of world-building going on for DC and Warner Bros these days. It makes sense after what Marvel Studios has accomplished these past 5+ years. They have a lot of catching up to do but in the rush to get there, they have to be careful not to stumble in to too many pitfalls. The [Suicide Squad](movie:2283363) movie may be the biggest test they'll be facing in the near future.
Batman and Superman are the two biggest known quantities for DC movie fans and I'll go ahead and say that they're in pretty safe hands with Goyer and Snyder. On the other hand, the Suicide Squad isn't the best known DC property even though members like Deadshot and Harley Quinn are fan favorites in some circles. The hope is that they don't feel like they can take whatever liberties they wish to with these characters and there are already rumors that this may be the case.
Over at Latino Review, there was a reveal of two supporting sources that gave a general rundown of the plot for the upcoming Suicide Squad movie. While some folks have been a bit disappointed that Tom Hardy recently dropped out of the film as Rick Flag, the plot leaks may provide a reason behind his decision.
Let's get into a little Suicide Squad background in case you aren't familiar. The set-up is pretty great as it is a bit like the Dirty Dozen of the comic book world. The government decides to take some prisoners, fit them with some explosives they can set off in case they make a wrong move, and send them off on "suicide" missions that they deem too risky for good guys to take care of. Beware, spoilers may follow...
Delving into the villains is an excellent way to expand the DC movie universe. It not only allows for a look at the world outside of Gotham and Metropolis but can also set up environments for future DC movies.
The prison that the Suicide Squad is run out of is Belle Reve and it is a great source for material both as a way to bring new characters in as well as showing us what's up with characters we may have seen in previous movies. It seems fairly certain that we'll see the Joker move from Arkham to Belle Reve in the film and this kind of opportunity is the perfect kind reintroduction that character needs right now.
Belle Reve is overseen by a kind of evil Dr. Amanda Waller and the mentally unstable, but upstanding patriot, Rick Flag who acts as team leader. According to the leaked reports one of the main reveals towards the end of the film was to have Rick Flag turn bad guy in a switcheroo that would completely put his character, and his father's character as well, at odds with his DC history.
This is exactly the kind of pitfall that a Suicide Squad movie could get into. With a large group of characters to work with, along with getting a peak at all sorts of villains behind Belle Reve bars - they have to be careful not to be too clumsy with these representations and completely mess with possible future uses of the characters.
While the Suicide Squad movie is reportedly deepening the story of what Lex Luthor is up to, it appears Amanda Waller is carrying a bit of a grudge against Batman as well. While it doesn't sound like we'll be seeing much of Batman outside of some surveillance footage she has on him, the ending of the movie sounds like it could provide material for the next Batman movie and other future DC films.
Having Joker at your prison is bound to cause all sorts of problems and the leaked plot has Joker taking part in a prison breakout that sees many potential adversaries for future DC movies making their escape. Could the Suicide Squad be a direct lead-in to a future non Justice League related Batman film?
