Johnny Depp is undoubtedly a Hollywood megastar with one of the best reputations around. He's played all kinds of different roles and is perhaps the "go-to guy" when it comes to playing kooky and outlandish characters. Unsurprisingly, his net worth is apparently in the region of $350 million!
But all that didn't come easily.
A staggering 31 years ago, Depp made his movie debut in Wes Craven's 1984 classic A Nightmare on Elm Street. Typically, Johnny started as he meant to go on: the film was a smash hit, loved by critics and audiences alike.
Since then he's played well over 30 characters. Some complex, some serious, some hilarious, and some down right bizarre: all of them entertaining.
Take a look below to relive Johnny's career as it happened!
A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984)
This is where it all began for a fresh-faced, 20-year-old Johnny Depp.
He stars as Glen Lantz, a student at Springwood High, who experiences a series of tormenting dreams featuring a man who later turns out to be Freddy Krueger.
Later in movie Freddy pulls Glen from his bed and murders him!
A star is born.
Edward Scissorhands (1990)
It was in this childhood classic that Johnny had his first major starring role as Edward Scissorhands, an animated human created by a wacky scientist.
Unfortunately the scientist dies just before finishing him, leaving Edward with scary looking, scissor-like arms.
Edward is kind and talented but his hands make him an outcast, feared by the population of his small village: a role Johnny played to perfection.
Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas (1998)
Nobody else could have played the role of Hunter.S.Thompson better than Johnny Depp. Johnny idolized and eventually befriended the legendary author before his untimely death in 2005.
The film, based on Hunter's book Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, is a tale of sex, drugs, alcohol, and... journalism.
Fun fact: Johnny paid for the Hunter Thompson's funeral which featured fireworks and his ashes being fired from a 150ft cannon!
Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl (2003)
Johnny's portrayal of Captain Jack Sparrow in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise is perhaps his best performance to date. It's also the one for which he is now most known.
Johnny based the cheeky character on Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards and the cartoon character Pepé Le Pew.

He's such a versatile actor!
Alice in Wonderland (2010)
In the box office smash hit Alice in Wonderland, Johnny starred as The Mad Hatter alongside Mia Wasikowska as Alice.
The film further cemented his long-standing and successful partnership with director Tim Burton.
The film boasted mind-bending takings of $1.02 billion back when it was released in 2010.
In this his latest film, Mortdecai, Johnny stars as a charismatic British aristocrat and part-time shady art dealer who suffers from a constant lack of funds to support his lush lifestyle.
Unfortunately it hasn't done so well at the box office taking in just $.4.3 million, but I still think he's great in it!
