My small town in The Pocono Mountains of Northeast Pennsylvania is bracing for another clobbering from the relentless Old Man Winter, this time expecting 10-14 inches of snow. Like most lunatics, I join the mad dash to the grocery store for milk, bread, eggs, and toilet paper. The difference in my hectic, last minute storm preparations is evident in my next stop, the electronics department.

The potential for being snowed in serves as the catalyst to this brief list I found myself putting together of horror/suspense/thriller type movies that take place in the snow. After all, nothing maximizes the dramatic effect of a scary movie like being snowed in, trapped in your own home. I made this list for my own purposes, and decided after the fact that I should share them on MoviePilot in case there are others out there looking for a short list of snowed-in favorites.

Here goes :

7. Dead Snow. Nazi zombies and campy horror run amok in this cult favorite.

Just look at that face! Muah!
Just look at that face! Muah!

6. Let The Right One In. A different take on the vampire genre of movies, Let The Right One In has made it on the favorites list for lots of fans of vampire movies and horror movies alike. Check it out, fun times!

5. Insomnia. A detective hunts a killer in Alaska during a time of year when the sun doesn't set. Al Pacino, Hilary Swank, and Robin Williams and directed by Christopher Nolan. Great movie.

4. 30 Days of Night. One of the better vampire movies to have been released in the last 10 years, takes place during a time of no sun in a small town in Alaska. Some argue this is more action than horror, but it fits this list nicely so I kept it here.

3. Pontypool. Great suspense/thriller. Awesome lead character. Cool, creepy, fun. A different approach to "zombies" as we know them. Definitely check this one out, I enjoyed it thoroughly.

2. The Thing. This is classic suspense right here. And it fits the list perfectly - snowed in, can't leave, something is wrong and there is no escape! I could go on forever about this one, but I'll spare you my words and give you a picture!

1. The Shining. One of the all-time greats in the horror/suspense/thriller genres. Great performances, great direction, all around excellent execution. If you can only pick one of these movies, and you haven't seen The Shining, this is absolutely the one you MUST watch! "Here's Johnny!"
