Will 2016 Be Fox's Biggest Year?
The X-Men are about to close out a second trilogy with [X-Men: Apocalypse](movie:1194267) in 2016. But that year will also be Fox's most prolific year be including both a Deadpool movie with Ryan Reynolds and a Gambit movie with Channing Tatum. Are the folks at Fox planning a bigger future for their X-Men characters?
Could 2016 be the year that Fox will begin its own overarching movie universe in earnest? The table is certainly set - with [Deadpool](movie:38663) early in the year, followed by the closing X-Men chapter and [Gambit](movie:612399) following just a few months afterwards. It's the perfect time for Fox to get things in order for the future of their superhero characters.
The Future of the X-Men
Movie stars, they're just like us. Wouldn't you know it, they get older ever year. Sure, Hugh Jackman appears to have gotten hold of some Weapon X/Wolverine powers and refuses to age and perhaps has gotten even beefier in the most recent X-Men movies, but the truth is he's not exactly a spring chicken anymore.
With Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen in their 70s and good portion of the team receiving younger counterparts in X-Men: Apocalypse, there could very well be an eye toward the future of the franchise and rebuilding a new X-Men team from the ground up for whenever the next installment may arrive.
Deadpool & Gambit
The characters of Wolverine, Deadpool and Gambit all have ties to the Weapon X program in their history to go on top of their on again - off again membership status with the X-Men. Deadpool, like Wolverine is actually the kind of guy that doesn't really play all that well with others. I don't think anyone is expecting him to actually join the X-Men in any capacity.
But there is definitely potential for Deadpool to factor in to future X-Men movies - I wouldn't complain if they went back to the X-Men 2 well and further explored the Weapon X program. When it comes to the government and mutants - there is bound to be plenty of crossover potential between the X-Men trying to be the respectable heroes and Deadpool being the guy doing the dirty work.
Gambit, on the other hand, is the best candidate to be the Wolverine type star of the X-Men movies if Fox plans of having Jackman pass his torch. I really can't think of too many other actors aside from Channing Tatum who are more suited to both action and comedy in the way Hugh Jackman is. Sure, it's doubtful that Tatum can do a song and dance the way Jackman can but chances are the X-Men won't be going in that direction.
