There's been a slow wave of Star Wars news as of recent: The Force Awakens is heading in to reshoots this month, and that means new whispers from set. One of these particular whispers made it's way to Latino-Review, and if it's to be believed, fans of practical effects will be delighted.
According to L-R:
... there are Hutts in The Force Awakens, we know because those Hutts have been practically built. I know there is more than one Hutt, but unsure how many exactly are going to show up. The process of constructing these Hutts began over a year ago, so you can imagine how my ears perked up when it was rumored that the Star Wars spin-off film would be “sharing assets” with The Force Awakens, despite being in different time periods.
The report goes on to detail the process of Hutt construction from those who were on set, and if this is truly real, we just might see some of that construction in the next few years on bonus DVDs.
The process of constructing these Hutts began over a year ago, so you can imagine how my ears perked up when it was rumored that the Star Wars spin-off film would be “sharing assets” with The Force Awakens, despite being in different time periods. Last time I speculated this would mostly be ships and interiors, but how hard can it be to re-dress a Hutt? Reaching out to a source, I was told: “I’m sure their existence could have factored in to them being included, or the expenditure was made because it was all coordinated.” In other words: if JJ wanted expensive Hutts, it might have been okay since they could be used down the line.
So, while it's unclear when and where we'll see these Hutts - or who they'll be, exactly - what we know for certain is that there are giant slug-like puppets in a warehouse, being prepped for shooting soon. But how will they factor in? Will they still smell as bad as Mark Hamill remembered them smelling?
The Force Awakens
The Hutts took center stage in the feature film that introduced [Star Wars: The Clone Wars](series:200641), with Jabba's son being kidnapped and the two warring factors of the galaxy racing to retrieve the youngling in order to gain the Hutt clan's favor. We could easily see the warlord family take on that kind of role once more, with old bitterness towards Princess Leia causing trouble during negotiations for their favor. As we saw Padme shine in the senate during the prequels, we could see Leia's political prowess in this particular situation reflect her mother's in a way.
The First Spin-Off
It's very easy to believe that the Hutts will play a major part in this film, especially because it involves Han Solo and Boba Fett. With Jabba the Hutt playing a central role in the duo's first on-screen fight, could the Hutts return to cause trouble for the smuggler and the bounty hunter again?
With new Hutt puppets built, it's likely we'll see the models re-used many times over the course of the next few movies. But what role will they play, and why do we really have to deal with more oozing giant slug-jerks in this trilogy too? I'm joking - bring on the cruelty, Hutt family!
