Hello, fellow Whovians and welcome to the first ever WHO WATCH. I will do my best to keep up with the actors who have made our lives a bit more timey wimey and brought the Doctor and all of his companions to life to live forever in our memories.

Christopher Eccleston has been busy after his stint as Malik, the Dark Elf, in Thor: The Dark World. Although he had choice words for the “The comic book franchise and popcorn movie” industry in a recent article, where he claimed it has “completely swallowed up the film going experience”. As much as I respect his art and dedication to the industry, it didn’t stop him from cashing that check from Marvel, did it? But, no, he is a professional and brings a great deal to the screen both big and small.

Just a few days ago (January 29th), another project he was been working on, FORTITUDE, debuted on Sky Atlantic. In it he plays Environmentalist, Charlie Stoddart (for 12 episodes in season one), who is found torn up but by human hands not animal. Seeing that Eccleston is up for twelve episodes, I’m sure there will be plenty of flashbacks as they try and determine who the killer is. My interest is peaked as this has been described as ‘watercooler drama’ ie. there will a lot of plot twists and evidence to talk about. It has been compared to Twin Peaks by some so it might be a strange ride.

“Fortitude is a place like nowhere else on Earth. Surrounded by the savage beauty of the polar landscape, its future sparkling with the promise of Arctic opportunity, wealth and discovery, Fortitude is one of the safest towns on earth. There has never been a violent crime here. Until now.”

Another project he is involved in is LEGEND coming in September.

“Identical twin gangsters Ronald and Reginald Kray terrorize London during the 1950s and 1960s.”

Eccleston will be portraying Detective Superintendent Leonard ‘Nipper’ Read who is the squad leader who is in charge of bringing the two to justice. Sounds old school Noir and he will fit in as the head cop.

And, apparently, if you get an interview with him, you had better not ask him about whether Peter Capaldi is doing a good job or not. He hung up on the Mirror. Just a heads up. MIRROR ARTICLE

Matt Smith has been a busy little actor as well, due to star in a strange update to an old classic. In 2015, the Jane Austin tale of ‘tangled relationships between different social classes in 19th century England’ will get a level up: ZOMBIES. That’s right. The modern mashup parody written by Seth Grahame-Smith (2009) will revisit Pride and Prejudice (1813) with an epidemic of the undead. Pride and Prejudice and Zombies will see Matt Smith play Mr. Collins; one man who proposes marriage to the heroine who would rather join the fight against the undead. This is definitely a unique twist to a crowd favorite. I mean, first, we had Abraham Lincoln against the zombies and vampires (in different movies), now this. What’s next? A walk with the walkers in the old west or during World War One or Two? Who knows?

Smith will be leaving the past behind to star in Terminator:Genesis; where he will be a part of a bleak future.

'After finding himself in a new time-line, Kyle Reese teams up with John Connor's mother Sarah and an aging terminator to try and stop the one thing that the future fears, "Judgement Day".'

This movie is due out July 1st this year and hopes to get that holiday crowd. What I’ve seen I’ve liked. Smith looks a bit strange in all of the pictures I’ve seen, but I like his work and I’m sure he will be awesome. As for this reboot/revisioning, the court’s still out. They will be hard pressed to find a new slant on such a well known idea.

And, for Matt, it’s back to zombies as he stars this year in PATIENT ZERO about a man who speaks zombie looking for the cure and this ‘patient zero’. Not sure what Smith is playing, but I don’t think he’s the lead. He is joined in the cast by Game of Throne’s Natalie Dormer.

David Tennant continues to star in the murder mystery show, Broadchurch, as it heads into its second season. I’ve only watched the first episode so the court is out, but it seems the fact that it continues on means it has a following.

But, I have to say, I’m most excited about his joining the Marvel Universe as the sinister Purple Man, a mind control freak who will be giving AKA JESSICA JONES someone to hate. This has possibilities. Being on Netflix, the show can push the limit a bit on adult content. But not too much. Marvel/Disney still want the family to show up to the ratings. Either way, this is a role Tennant can sink his teeth in.

He’s also narrated the television series, PETS-Wild at Heart. Later on this year (no date given for release), he will be giving his voice to squirrels in an upcoming animated feature. Maybe. In REDS AND GRAYS, he will be voicing a character caught up in a war between squirrels. Yes, it is animated, but that’s all I know about this one for now. I’ll let you know as soon as I get more.

Billy Piper (Rose) can be seen in eight episodes of PENNY DREADFUL. In a show where Supernatural meets League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, she portrays Bona Croft, a Consumption victim who has a connection with one of the lead characters, Ethan Chandler. This is another show that I have not had the pleasure of watching. I love watching Piper and love spooky, supernatural drama. So, I might have to go out of my way to watch this.

One of my personal favorite companions was the usually bewildered Rory Williams. Arthur Darvill was always fun to watch and, besides Broadchurch, we haven’t seen him here in the states. It may be because he’s been busy on stage! Yes, right now, he is playing Long John Silver in Robert Louis Stevenson’s TREASURE ISLAND as adapted by Byrony Lavery. Personally, I would love to see his version of the peg-legged back-stabbing pirate. But, ALAS, it is not to be. That is unless I get a plane or boat ticket over to England and tickets to the Royal National Theatre. Maybe he will visit the States soon. (Note: Arthur is also an accomplished musician and composer)

Probably the busiest ex-companion is Karen Gillan. In the wake of her Television series, SELFIE, being cancelled she seems to be gearing up for a decent movie career. Oculus was an amazingly written thriller and showed us a lot of what Gillan can do. Unfortunately, she was not given enough screen time in the Marvel space epic, The Guardians of the Galaxy, to do her credit. She will be appearing in THE LIST, due out this year and IN A VALLEY OF VIOLENCE, a ‘revenge western’ on December 4th, 2015. Personally, I can’t wait to see her in a western. One of the few projects she’s been involved in that I can get my wife on board with. Lol.

With Eccleston, Tennant and Karen Gillan all starring in Marvel properties, John Borrowman has sunk his teeth in a DC comics character. Playing the manipulative Malcolm Merlyn on the hit show ARROW, he is scene stealing once again. It’s good to see him pulling off a long term character in a solid show.

Freema Agyeman, the indelible Martha Jones, has had an eclectic television career, and 2015 is no different. SENSE 8 looks like an interesting project. One of the creators is Babylon 5 mastermind, J. Michael Staczynski.

“A group of people around the world are suddenly linked mentally, and must find a way to survive being hunted by those who see them as a threat to the world's order.”

All I got to say is Agyeman better be one of the main characters. She is also starring in the thriller, LONG TIME COMING (NORTH V SOUTH)

Alex Kingston, the notoriously fun River Song, has spent time on Arrow along with John Borrowman as Dinah Lance. She is starring in the biography of writer, Charles Bukowski, simply titled BUKOWSKI in 2015 as well as a project called Happily Ever After of which I have very little information.

That's all for know, my friends. I will be keeping a watch on the goings on of your favorite Doctors and companions. If you find out something I don't know, just email me at [email protected]
