Last week, several reports spun the rumor that[Orphan Black](series:785016)'s Tatiana Maslany had apparently landed the lead role in Chris Weitz's Star Wars spinoff - but now, it seems as though the leading lady from [The Theory of Everything](movie:1000359), Felicity Jones, is planning on a venture to a galaxy far, far away. According to THR, the actress (who was rumored for the role a while back) is in final talks for the lead role in the first of several Star Wars movie spinoffs.

The film itself has been rumored to be a Boba Fett or Han Solo adventure (or, most recently, both) that takes place before the events of A New Hope. Recent rumors, though, have spun the story a bit differently, and while I looked at the film last week in a previous report, I'd like to explore the possibilities once more.

The Sabine Rumor

Recently, rumors have been swirling around the spin-off, particularly focused on the young, creative Mandalorian from [Star Wars Rebels](series:965946). This particular rumor popped up over the weekend, so I wanted to address it specifically.

The rumor goes a little bit like this: the first spin-off film takes place after Return of the Jedi, and focuses on the Mandalorian people. The rumor that Boba Fett is a mantle has been debunked, but Mandalorians have been involved from the start of the rumors, so there's definitely reason to suspect Sabine.

While it would be incredible to see characters from Rebels on the big screen, I just don't think this one will be about Sabine. There's a great piece focusing on why the team behind Star Wars wouldn't cast a white actress for the role of Sabine (the short version: the creators meant for Sabine to be a person of color inspired by the citizens of India, and went as far as casting an Indian actress to voice her) and I fully agree with it. Disney seems to be getting very particular about casting choices for Star Wars, so I don't see them deterring from visual continuity when it comes to Sabine.

Like many fans, I'm also completely uncertain of what happens to the crew of the Ghost, but I'm pretty sure that the end of Rebels won't be extremely pretty.

Of course, Jones could simply be playing a different lead role, and Sabine could stand as yet-to-be-cast.

Ahsoka's Return

Alongside the rest of the [Star Wars: The Clone Wars](series:200641) fan base, I'm pulling for the return of Ahsoka Tano, Anakin Skywalker's first and only padawan. Ahsoka had a heartbreaking departure in Clone Wars, and her creator Dave Filoni has outright said that he knows exactly what happened to the young Jedi knight.

Could we see Ahsoka's big screen debut in this film? Fans are already speculating that Fulcrum, Hera Syndulla's link to the Rebel Alliance, is actually Ahsoka under cover - but if this movie does take place before A New Hope as the original rumors suggested, could we see an older Ahsoka officially revealing her identity on the big screen, for the first time?

Think about it this way: If Ahsoka is Fulcrum, and the film focuses on how the Rebels acquired the plans to the Death Star, it would make sense that Fulcrum - who informs the crew of the Ghost - could hire a certain smuggler or certain a bounty hunter for the dangerous mission of obtaining these plans. They're the best at their jobs (save for when they drop shipments at the first sign of an Imperial cruiser, Han) and they'd also be uninvolved with anything Ahsoka is associated with (at that point, at least).

Ahsoka was very young during the Clone Wars, roughly thirteen or fourteen years old, which would place her in her early thirties just before A New Hope. Felicity Jones is 31. Someone get this woman a headpiece and a lightsaber!

In the end, Jones could easily be playing a new character completely. We have no idea what the film is about, when it takes place, and who is involved outside of Jones, Gary Whitta (for the story's first draft), and Weitz. Outside of Jones, Aaron Paul and Edgar Ramirez are rumored for lead roles, though Paul has already started playing coy about these rumors.

Do you have any ideas for who Jones might be portraying in the upcoming spinoff? Sound off in the comments!
