Big news, Star Wars fans! The leading lady for the Star Wars standalone movie has been CAST.
And she's not just the leading lady. This up-and-coming actress will apparently be the lead role period for this Star Wars spinoff movie coming in 2016 (almost exactly a year after [Star Wars: Episode VII — The Force Awakens](movie:711158)).
Along for the ride will be Aaron Paul as the male lead (Jesse Pinkman from [Breaking Bad](series:200567), as if you didn't know that already).
So, who is this mystery actress?
Well, she's not much of a mystery these days. Felicity Jones, who you may recognize from Theory of Everything (the Oscar-nominated Stephen Hawking biopic), has been cast as the movie's frontrunner, though that's pretty much all we know so far.
Now, let's just get this out of the way. I've been clamoring for Felicity to catch break since Albatross and Like Crazy (both available on Netflix, just so you know). And now it looks like she's finally getting a chance to shine in cinema's biggest franchise. I'll take it.
But like I said, we know nothing of this spinoff movie (way little than we do the Bounty hunter movie apparently starring a young Han Solo and Boba Fett).
Some fans think Jones will be playing a young Leia to mimic this other spinoff movie, while some conspirators are even shouting Mon Mothma! from the rooftops.
My #1 pick is impossible because it involves Kyle Katarn and Jan Ors, but my #2 is that Felicity will be playing someone between Return of the Jedi and the new trilogy starting with The Force Awakens.
My guess is that this spinoff, since it comes directly after the first movie, will be about a character we learn more about in Force Awakens. In fact, I'd go as far to speculate that Felicity Jones will be playing someone related to Rey (Daisy Ridley), the lead actress we see on the speeder during the Force Awakens teaser.
She might even be her mother.
The only evidence I have to go by is the fact that they're both British actresses with pale skin and dark brown hair (though the accent might not be relevant).
It just seems odd that the filmmakers would deliberately feature two actresses in two movies who are that alike in appearance despite their apparent march toward diversity with actresses like Lupita Nyong'o and Gwendoline Christie.
Though that may just be my optimism coming through. What do you think?
The Star Wars Standalone Spinoff is set to release December 16, 2016.
Will Felicity Jones play a character directly related to Rey from "The Force Awakens?"
