Good news, everybody - the galaxy of potentially unfulfillable potential that is Star Trek 3 is about to get a whole lot more interesting.

The reason? One of TV's greatest ever anti-heroes (or a straight up villain, depending on who you ask) is heading to the franchise, set to play the movie's 'big bad.' The actor in question? Mr Bryan Cranston...

Yup, that's right - Breaking Bad's Walter White himself might - if recent rumors from Film Divider are to be believed - be on his way to Star Trek 3. The movie's villainous role has reportedly been written to be "Bryan Cranston-like", so much so that he's actually been approached for the part.

The big question, though?

Who'll He Be Playing?

Well, there's no confirmation as yet as to whether the part is an original one, or based on a character from earlier Star Trek lore - but seeing as super-nerd Simon Pegg is co-writing, it seems a decent bet that we'll be seeing someone we might just have seen before...

Like, for instance...

General Chang

As played by Christopher Plummer in Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country, Chang has a couple of key traits that single him out as a likely Cranston-esque figure.

After all, much like Cranston's Walter White, he's manipulative, dastardly - and ultimately trying to do right by his Klingon homeworld, just through unpleasant and deceptive means (he framed Kirk and Bones for murder to scupper a peace treaty).

Plus, Kirk and Bones being unjustly imprisoned by the Klingons, and having to be busted out by the rest of the team? That's just good ol' fashioned entertainment...

Alternatively, Cranston'd make a fantastic...

Q

As so memorably played by John de Lancie from Star Trek: The Next Generation on, there are few more beloved Star Trek villains than the extra-dimensional God-like being Q.

The best part? He's not even really a villain, usually taking on a role closer to a whimsical antagonist, manipulating the Enterprise crew as part of his own broader schemes. And, honestly, if you can't already see Cranston rocking that part, then watch this...

Clearly watching Bryan Cranston do exactly that is something we all deserve to see...

The other obvious alternative, though?

He'll Be a Brand New Character

But, seeing as we've already seen a duplicitous Starfleet officer (and Khan) in Star Trek Into Darkness, your guess as to who that'd be is as good as mine...

So, gang, what do you reckon? If we see Cranston in Star Trek 3, who'll he be playing? And, if it's a new character, just what kind of character will that be? Do you even want to see Cranston star, anyway?
