The MARVEL CINEMATIC UNIVERSE (MCU) continues to expand further and further with sequels, new solo films and tv series in development. While it is a bright horizon for those properties, the characters of the Phase 1 films are seemingly about to dim. With the advent of CIVIL WAR, INFINITY WAR, and RAGNAROK the MCU could be without it's biggest heroes.

That possibility is not a wholly terrible thing, as the absence of the BIG 3 offers the chance to spinoff their characters in fun and genre expanding ways.

First on the block, THOR.

This film would be the 1st of three remaining films left on Chris Helmsworth's original contract with MARVEL. So the possibility of a THOR-less MCU is very possible. Would [Marvel](channel:932254) walk away from such a rich tapestry of story lines?

Especially with the one thing fans have asked for is MORE Asgard. Add to that the void left behind by the culmination of THE HOBBIT/LORD OF THE RINGS trilogies (hexalogy?), and there's a golden opportunity to expand beyond superhero films and spinoff into the EPIC fantasy genre.

TALES OF ASGARD, introduced in 1963 followed the detailed the fantastical adventures of The Mighty Thor on Midgard and Asgard. While TALES was reimagined as a teen Thor and friends animated adventure film IN 2011, this SHOULD NOT be considered the approach for live action. The approach should be on the scale and vision of an fantasy film SAGA. The richness and complexity of the source material's characters and environments deserves no less.

Now you may be thinking, if there is no THOR, just who would be the hero of a TALES OF ASGARD film(s).

SIF AND THE WARRIORS THREE would be a worthy successors. A film that follows the continuing adventures of Thor's compatriots introduced in THOR and THOR: THE DARK WORLD. It gives these supporting characters a chance to shine and become fully fleshed heroes, while diving deeper into a world only glimpsed previously, that is just as vibrant as Middle-Earth.

[I for one would love to see an Asgardian army led by Sif, Fandral, Hogan and Volstagg clash with Hela's army of the dead.]

The chemistry between the Errol Flynn, Charles Bronson, and Falstaff of Asgard is undeniable and combined with the fierce femininity of Sif is a winning combination.

But if Marvel wanted to move away from already established characters, there is the unique opportunity to introduce a character just as worthy as Thor to sit on the throne of Asgard, his very own brother.

BALDER THE BRAVE, could serve as the hero of the spinoff, what with his love/hate relationship with KARNILLA, Queen of the Norns. And like his half brother he wields a magical weapon, the Sword of Frey, in defense of Asgard.

BETA RAY BILL, admittedly a far better fit for THOR: RAGNAROK (or THOR 4), could be a suitable character to flesh out in continuing spinoff stories if combined with a Chris Helmsworth Thor cameo.

As an aside, if THOR were to no longer be a part of the MCU, there is one existing hero that should be considered as a replacement seeing as they would fit the mold left behind perfectly. Plus in the comics she was a DEFENDER.

Oh and let's not forget, TALES OF ASGARD could mean more LOKI!

Have fun!
