Marvel has been on a consistent role since their cinematic universe debut with 2008’s Iron-Man. Marvel is not slowing down anytime soon. This universe that they have built continues to thrive and fans keep jumping on the bandwagon. However, it is interesting to ponder how much is too much for this cinematic universe?
Before you all want to fire repulsor rays at me or use Thor’s hammer to strike me down with lightning, let me just explain the purpose of this article. I firmly enjoy these Marvel films that they have gladly given us. From Iron-Man all the way to last summer’s [Guardians of the Galaxy](movie:424073), Marvel has brought us in to enjoy this roller coaster ride of amusement. But I feel that the general audience may eventually become confused after seeing all these films unfold. However, the inner fan in me keeps asking and wanting more.
Since the beginning of this universe, we were introduced to characters such as Iron-Man, Hulk, Thor, and Captain America. Then a few others arrived in the form of S.H.I.E.L.D. like Nick Fury, [Black Widow](movie:1070824), Maria Hill, Hawkeye, and Agent Carter. These characters have stayed with us for a while now and it seems that we had just gotten to know them. Meanwhile, there will be other heroes to join the universe such as those from Guardians of the Galaxy. But wait there’s more!; Black Panther, [Ant-Man](movie:9048), Doctor Strange, Captain Marvel, and the Inhumans. So many more heroes to pack into this universe. Where will it end?
The good news is that we at least have an idea of what direction Marvel is headed. EVERYTHING and I mean everything beginning from [The Avengers: Age Of Ultron](movie:293035) will all lead to the ultimate face-off against Thanos in the Infinity Wars. However, we won’t yet know who will star in the Infinity Wars. We just assume that EVERYONE will be in it, which is a good possibility.
I am excited to see how all of these future films will connect and eventually lead into the Infinity Wars. The only issue that I feel the general audience may encounter is the films leading up to Infinity Wars, more specifically the newer characters. Unless you haven’t been keeping track, here is a full list of characters that may/may not end up in Infinity Wars: Iron-Man, Hulk, Captain America, Thor, Bucky Barnes, Falcon, Black Widow, Hawkeye, Nick Fury, and Maria Hill. That right there is TEN people who have been with us up until this point (assuming none of them have perished in previous films). The newer avengers or allies up until Infinity Wars may include: Quicksilver, Scarlet Witch, Ant-Man, Vision, Black Panther, Doctor Strange, Captain Marvel, AND the Inhumans. That is A LOT of characters to fit into ONE film (maybe they will split them up in Part 1 and Part 2).
We have quite a few solo movies to get through until we arrive at the Infinity Wars. These will include [Black Panther](movie:9047), Doctor Strange, and Captain Marvel. That does not even include ALL of the Inhuman characters we will most likely have been introduced to in the Inhumans movie. These films will potentially lead from one right into the other much like the previous movies have done thus far directing us into Avengers: Age of Ultron and this summer’s Ant-Man.
I am extremely excited to see the new direction that Marvel will be taking for Phase 3. However, I feel as though they have introduced too many characters to engage the general audiences interest. Most people I have spoken with want to watch the movies for their enjoyment without having to backtrack what they previously know and saw from the other films. As we lead into the Infinity Wars, it will be necessary to have seen ALL of the previous films just to know and understand what is going on.
The tv shows such as [Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.](series:722469) and Agent Carter will appear highly relevant to future films (at least their trying to make it seem that way). There have been talks that the Inhumans will take place in one of these shows. Is it important that I watch EVERY single episode just to understand what’s going on? Hopefully not, but if Marvel is desperately trying to rake in more fans to watch the tv series, they will do whatever it takes to make it happen. I don’t plan on ever watching those shows (I don’t have a lot of time on my hands anyways) but I would be content with just the films.
So going back to my original question, “Is Marvel Expanding TOO MUCH?” In a way I believe they are, but in no way will they lose my interest. The more the merrier for me! The same goes for all those die-hard super-hero fans out there. I’m just speaking out for the general audience especially the ones who are now just climbing aboard on the cinematic universe. I feel like NOW is the time to begin watching ALL of the films starting with 2008’s Iron-Man. I believe that if people wait to start watching them after this year (after Avengers: Age of Ultron and Ant-Man), people may not wish to finally join this cinematic universe. Or worse, they may feel like it's too late. Well, to be honest it’s NEVER too late!
Marvel has written quite a story thus far and I truly believe that it’s only going to get better. There may be dark times ahead for our heroes, but I know that there is a climactic victory at the end of this universe. Lets all enjoy the ride while we can and prepare for the ultimate battle that lies ahead! THANOS,…. WE'RE COMING FOR YOU!!!
So what do you all make of this? Do you believe that Marvel may be expanding their universe a bit much? Or do you feel as though we should all just enjoy the ride that Marvel has laid out for us? Please share your thoughts in the comment section below!
