Lindsay Lohan's foray into Hollywood made her into a global star and one of the most recognizable child actors in the industry. Back then, it seemed as if the young girl has the whole world in the palm of her hand and millions around the world looked up to her talent and success.
Starting as a model at the tiny age of 3, Lindsay quickly made her way up in the entertainment business, making her break with NBC soap opera Another World and then being cast in classics such as The Parent Trap. Check out her adorable freckles in her memorable performance as the Mills' twins in the trailer:
Following up with Freaky Friday in 2003 (alongside Jamie Lee Curtis) and Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen a year later, Lohan was certainly making a name for herself as a bona fide young star. Yet, even the teen herself did not anticipate the colossal success that would be Mean Girls, making her the queen of the silver screen.
As perhaps one of the most quotable movies of the past decade, her role as Cady Heron skyrocketed the red-head to stratospheric fame.
So, Where Did It All Go Wrong?
A Success Story Shattered
Just when it was all going so well for her, Lindsay's success story began to dramatically descend in a downward spiral.
As her career went into overdrive, so did Lilo. With a debut album released in 2004 and much hype surrounding her new film Herbie: Fully Loaded, she became a paparazzi magnet thanks to her excessive lifestyle and association with notorious party girls like Paris Hilton and Britney Spears.
Causing a stir with her scandalous shenanigans, Lindsay did not help the situation by allowing incriminating photos of her (such as this one with knives) being leaked:
Such media exploits simply marked her out as one of Hollywood's biggest jokes and what followed were numerous hospitalizations for health problems such as kidney failure and treatments for 'exhaustion.'

A Falling Out Of Favor With The Industry
Naturally, Lindsay's hard-partying lifestyle took its toll on the young star's career and personal well-being. Hospitalized yet again while working on Georgie Rule, the head of Morgan Creek Productions openly chastised Lilo for acting "like a spoiled child." In a transcript of the letter, the producer said:
"You and your representatives have told us that your various late arrivals and absences from the set have been the result of illness; today we were told it was 'heat exhaustion.' We are well aware that your ongoing all night heavy partying is the real reason for your so called 'exhaustion.' We refuse to accept bogus excuses for your behavior.
To date, your actions on 'Georgia Rule' have been discourteous, irresponsible and unprofessional. You have acted like a spoiled child and in so doing have alienated many of your co-workers and endangered the quality of this picture. Moreover, your actions have resulted in hundreds of thousands of dollars in damage. We will not tolerate these actions any further."
Lindsay's Plummeting Weight
Just when we thought that things could not get any more difficult for the young star, Lindsay re-emerged with a whole array of new problems. Terribly skinny, the now-blonde bombshell's weight seemed to have gotten out of control. Later, she admitted to making herself sick all the time and that:
"I knew I had a problem and I couldn't admit it [...] My arms were disgusting. I had no arms."
An Intense Battle With Drug Addiction
Underlying all these issues was Lindsay's drug use, already made evident by her recurrent return to rehab over the years. In November 2007, she gave herself into jail for cocaine possession and drunk driving. Speaking of that period in her life, she later said that she hit "rock bottom," admitting:
"I abused substances too much and it wasn't the answer to my problems. People need to know that [...] I tried to mask my problems with alcohol, cocaine and mind-altering substances."
In 2009, she breached her 18-month alcohol education program and showed up in court looking like this:
Receiving no sympathy from the LA Superior Court Judge, she was sentenced to three consecutive 30-day sentences, before being taken to rehab. With the ensuing legal drama, she wept as she was aggressively branded as a serial liar by the jury and was sentenced to over three months in jail. Here is her booking photo from July 20, 2010:
Having served her time in jail, the young star was taken right back in for failing another drug test. Over the next few years, she continued to go in and out of jail and rehab countless time, participating in courtroom drama for crimes such as stealing jewelry from LA stores and reckless driving. At one point, the judge reminded her:
"If you violate the law, I will remand you and set no bail [...] You need to follow the law just like anybody else. You are no better than anybody else... Please don't push your luck!"
A Semi-Successful Comeback
Constantly up and down, Lindsay's most recent rehab stint was in May 2013 following her third arrest. Instead of spending time in jail for reckless driving, she agreed to spend time in a rehabilitation center and after re-emerging a few months later, it seems that finally Lindsay's life was slowly getting back on track.
Last October 2014, she made her stage debut in London's West End of Speed-the-Plow and (despite embarrassingly forgetting her lines during the second act of the play) it seems that she is finally determined to change her ways. Nevertheless, theater critics were very happy to see the volatile star take the stage, with one gushing that:
"Whatever her colorful past, Lohan brings on stage a quality of breathless naivety that is far and away the most interesting thing in Lindsay Posner's otherwise tame, under-powered revival,"
Speaking on the UK's Jonathan Ross Show that same Autumn, she openly spoke about her stints in jail and her troubled past:
Clearly, back then Lindsay was trying her best to get back onto the straight and narrow after all those brushes with the law, personal problems and addiction issues. Finally, she seemed to be seeing the detriment her poor life choices were causing.
A Chance At Love
And following on from her interview for The Jonathan Ross Show, it seemed the starlet was going from strength-to-strength, largely due to the fact that she finally appeared to be in a happy relationship.
For months, Lohan's fans were graced with pics of the loved-up, 30-year-old actress on various holidays in Europe with her 23-year-old businessman boyfriend Egor Tarabasov. The two looked besotted with one another and even moved into a flat in London, sparking rumours that things were very serious between them. However, in July 2016, Lindsay caused headlines around the world once more when she revealed that the unstable relationship was actually marred with violence and distrust. Amid the allegations of furious rows, she was quoted as saying:
"I realise now you can't stay in a relationship just for love. No woman can be hit and stay with that person if that person isn't prepared to say sorry."
No charges were ever pressed against Egor, and the pair have since separated.
So, Where Is Lindsay Lohan Now?
You can't argue that life's not been too kind to Lindsay Lohan, yet despite the various pitfalls and the heartbreak of her most recent relationship, the actress is still adamant that she has high hopes for a happy ending. Turning away from the damaging climate of Hollywood, she continues to lead a low-key lifestyle in London. Speaking to the Daily Mail in August 2016, she recently revealed exactly what she's been up to:
"In London I walk everywhere and I'm never bothered. I love the parks and the freedom. I have a quiet life, I have facials and go shopping. I meditate every day. I'm not obsessed with Hollywood any more, I just want to work. My plan is to go there to work and then come home to London. I'm a really good actress, I know that. I've made mistakes, the important thing is I've learned from them. I'm just sad this has all happened now because I've worked hard to get my life flowing again."
