Each week we will be picking our favorite comic books, books, and video games to do some fantasy casting for! This week, Jason Pearson's Body Bags.
For the uninitiated Body Bags is a creator owned series by Jason Pearson. The first 4 issue series was printed in 1996 by Dark Horse Comics. This was to be followed by a 6 issues series that was scraped due to an illness to Pearson. The next collection was in 2005 at Image Comics and was 2 issues that collected the original 4 issues. Then in 2006 Image released Body Bags: 3 The Hard Way; a single issue that reprinted two previously released short stories and one new one. The most recent time we've seen the series was in 2008 in another one shot, Body Bags: Panda's One Shot at Prime Time.
The basic gist of the first series is: A rival 'Body Bagger' (aka Bounty Hunter) goes after Mack (a.k.a. Clown Face) the best 'bagger' in the business and his partner Pops. Fuel is quickly added to the fire with the sudden arrival of Panda, Mack's estranged 14 year old daughter. Panda wants to be a 'bagger' but Mack has other ideas. There's tons of action, violence, blood, swearing, and family drama. You'd think you were reading a comic if Quentin Tarantino wrote one.
Without further adieu here is our pics for the cast (click for bigger images):
Mack Delgado A.K.A. Clownface played by Matt Willig
Mack, one of the main characters of the series, is a big, imposing, intimidating of a man; and Willig has played big, imposing, intimidating men already. From TV shows Dexter, NCIS, Chuck, My Name is Earl, and The Young & The Restless to movie roles in Year One, The Employer, and We're The Millers; Willig has the build and voice to play the big man with bigger knives.
Panda Delgado played by Vanessa Hudgens
This is a tricky one. Now in the comic Panda is Mack's 14 year old, very voluptuous, gun toting daughter; now that may have just been deemed controversial but for a movie or even TV show that jsut wont fly. So we'll have to age Panda to at least 18 and with that enable Ms. Hudgens to play the little spitfire. We've seen Vanessa shoot up the screen in Sucker Punch and she would look amazing in that cheerleader outfit!
Pops played by Ruben Blades
Pops is Mack's voice of reason and long time friend. They have been friends long before Panda was born and are more like brothers than anything. We would need someone older not too much older than Willig and Blades fits that bill. In addition to being a phenomenal actor Blades fits the role of older voice of reason for the hotheaded Mack. Blades is known from: Milagro Bean Field War, The Two Jakes, Predator 2, Once Upon a Time In Mexico, and Safe House.
Janus played by Diego Luna
Janus is a rival 'Bagger' who wants to end Mack and Pops as the top 'Baggers' around. He's quick, deadly, and narcissistic who works for boss Sisco. Luna has the chops to play that to the hilt. As seen in Elysium, Casa de Mi padre, Contraband, and Milk, Luna has great range as an actor and this role would give him the chance to fill out his action and villain categories.
Black Angus played by Bokeem Woodbine
Black Angus is another one of the boss Sisco's flunky/hitmen. He's more the henchmen whereas Janus is the hitman. Nevertheless Angus is still a physically imposing and deadly player in the bagger game. So it stand to reason we'd need a guy who can play imposing and deadly, and the first to come to mind was Woodbine who's done action roles in: The Rock, The Big Hit, 3000 Miles To Graceland, Black Dynamite, Riddick, and Total Recall.
Sisco played by Rebel Wilson
For Sisco, the boss of the 'Baggers', we figured we'd go outside the box and pick someone who wouldn't be the first choice. Rebel is a great actress as seen in Pitch Perfect, Pain &Gain, What to Expect When Your Expecting, and Bachelorette; and would be a real wild card for the role. I mean could you picture it? She walks in guns blazing?? Crazy!
Sheriff Toni Sinn played by Jada Pinkett Smith
The only other recurring character in the Body Bags series is Sheriff Toni Sinn. She strong, forceful, is always packing, not afraid to get her hands dirty, and works with the Baggers. Pinkett Smith would be the perfect choice for the role of the law in BB. For other strong roles by her check out: The Women, The Matrix Trilogy, Set it Off, Gotham, and Demon Knight.
Maureen Scorcese played by Charlize Theron
Charlize Theron brings a level of class and sophistication to any role she plays and Maureen would be a walk in the park. Maureen is the catalyst for most of what transpires in the first series and the wife of mob boss Antonio Scorcese. A brief role it may be but an important one. Look for Charlize in these: Monster, Prometheus, Snow White and the Huntsman, Young Adult, Hancock, and Mad Max.
Antonio Scorsese played by Andy Garcia
The mob boss with the nasty temper is a perfect fit for mafia alum Andy Garcia. With a smoking hot wife, ass of a son, a mafia empire, and cyborg manhunters we'd need a real strong tough guy to play the role. Garcia is no stranger to tough guys as seen in The Godfather 3, The Untouchables, Hoodlum, Smokin' Aces, and Black Rain.
Detective Kurgle/One Eyed Jack played by Walton Goggins
Obviously Jason Pearson had Walton Goggins in mind when he drew out Detective Kurgle. Being the jerk that Kurgle is Goggins would be right at home as the crooked cop. See more of Goggins in: The Shield, Justified, Sons of Anarchy, Django Unchained, Predators, Cowboys vs Aliens, and House of 1000 Corpses.
That's a pretty jam packed cast. This would make on hell of a movie or a great TV show for HBO or Cinemax. Come on Jason, let's make this happen!!
