Earlier this month, I had the awesome opportunity of attending this year's Celebration of Harry Potter at Universal Orlando Studios! Celebration of Harry Potter first debuted in 2014 as a special convention event for Potter fans every where, but due to popular demand, the special 3-day weekend event returned this year, bigger and better than ever! The magical event not only featured special demonstrations by wand choreographer Paul Harris, talks by film art director Alan Gilmore, and Q&A sessions with film cast members but you could also find hard core fans decked out in the best Hogwarts has to offer!
Make sure to check back in on Moviepilot later this week for a full look back on my weekend full of magical fun, but for now, let's take a look at the best cosplayers in the wizarding world!
9. The Hogwarts Students
On my way to Diagon Alley, I bumped into these Hogwarts students on their way to get their magical supplies for the year. This Slytherin, Hufflepuff, and Gryffindor obviously don't care about House stereotypes and are clearly the best of buds. All that's missing is a Ravenclaw. Way to break the mold, guys!
8. Professor McGonagall
This woman made me take a double take when I first saw her. Normally cosplayers run in packs of costume clad friends, but not this lady! This Professor McGonagall worked the figurative runway all by herself while pushing her adorable little grandchild in a stroller. This woman has no shame and should be proud of it. Look at her! She has the McGonagall outfit down to a T, from the emerald robe to the feathers on the top of her witch's hat. I only hope to be this cool of a Potter fan when I grow up! Keep on keepin' on Professor!
7. Professor McGonagall...Again
I found another Professor McGonagall! The main reason this Professor outranks #8 is because #7 has eyes that exactly match her robe! You can't really see it here, but the woman has emeralds for eyes, I swear! Looks like many of the older Potter fan women at the Wizarding World really admire Minerva!
6. Nymphadora Tonks
Say hello to everyone's favorite shape-shifting witch, Nymphadora Tonks! Tonks, who is probably one of the most underrated witches in the wizarding world, is one of the few magical folks with the privilege of calling herself a Metamorphmagus. Her metaphoric abilities allow her to transform into any gender, age, and even animal.
However, what makes this cosplayer's outfit truly awesome is not what she's wearing but rather what she's carrying. See the puppy in the crook of her arm? Well, ladies and gentleman, that pup is none other than Remus Lupin. Despite Lupin's protests that he was too dangerous for her, Lupin and Tonks eventually married and had a little boy named Teddy, who was also born a Metamorphmagus.
Unfortunately, both Lupin and Tonks died during the Battle of Hogwarts, leaving Teddy in the care of Harry, his godfather.
5. Bellatrix Lestrange
The Order of the Phoenix better watch out, because it looks like Bellatrix Lestrange is about to break into 12 Grimmauld Place at any moment now! This Bellatrix fan pays some serious attention to detail! Her hair has the iconic touch of blonde, she willingly squeezed herself into a corset, and she's even sporting Bellatrix's creepily curved and crooked wand!
Very impressive cosplaying, Bellatrix!
4. Bellatrix and Obscure Death Eater
Bellatrix decided to pop up again during my weekend in the Wizarding World, but she had a *ahem* lovely friend accompanying her this time. I have endearingly dubbed this man "Obscure Death Eater." This darkly dapper man could be any one of Voldemort's many followers. Bearing the Dark Mark as a symbol of their loyalty, death eaters were constantly at the Dark Lord's beck and call. Following their terrible defeat after the First Wizarding War, however, many of Voldemort's followers were thrown into Azkaban while others, like Lucius, successfully evaded imprisonment and continued to champion pure blood supremacy. Once Voldemort returned, his followers quickly returned, mostly for fear of the Dark Lord's vengeance were he to be betrayed or abandoned...
3. The Lovegood Family
This trio is one of my personal favorite cosplaying groups from that weekend! Not only did I run into a lion-headed Luna with her special-edition Quibbler in hand but her father Xenophilus and her mother Pandora were in attendance as well. These three went all out on their costumes! What was most impressive, however, was their interpretation of Luna's mother, Pandora. Pandora died when Luna was merely 9 years old from an experimental spell gone wrong, and, therefore, readers did not get much detail on what she looked like physically. That didn't stop this fun loving mother, though!
From her whimsical flower crown to the strange hybrid creature Luna would love, I'm sure that Pandora's outfit would be Rowling approved! The real Luna herself loved the family's costumes so much, that she instagram-ed a photo with them!
These are some really lucky cosplayers!
2. The Beauxbaton
I found this lovely Beauxbaton on my way out of Honeyduke's on Sunday! This French witch, whose school name translates to "Beautiful Wands," studies the magical arts at the Palace of Beauxbatons in the Pyrenees mountains under the ever watchful eye of Madame Olympe Maxime. The Beauxbatons joined Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry and the Durmstrang Institute in the 1994 Triwizard Tournament at Hogwarts.
Fleur Delacour was chosen as the Beauxbaton champion that year.
You can catch a performance by the French witches along with the Durmstrang wizards during the Triwizard Spirit Rally every day at Hogsmeade Village!
1. The Human Time Turner
And last but certainly not least, the Human Time Turner! This guy is definitely my favorite cosplayer of the weekend. Yes, everyone else on the list had impeccably designed outfits, but this guy...this hero...had to design his from scratch and took the meaning of "bling" to a whole new level! My only concern, though, is that I'm pretty sure having a Time Turner that huge on your neck should be considered a major magical safety hazard. Someone should probably contact the Ministry right about now.....
And there you have it folks, the top cosplayers at the Wizarding World of Harry Potter in Orlando, Florida! I want to thank Moviepilot for organizing such an incredible weekend for me and Universal Orlando Studios for creating an event where Potter fans from all over the globe can come together and celebrate the magical world we all love so much. Even though this year was only the second year of Celebration of Harry Potter, it has already become a huge success. I truly hope that the Universal Studios team will continue to work to create these kinds of events for Potter fans both old and new, and I look forward to watching Celebration of Harry Potter continue to grow in the future!
