Back in 2009, watching the VMAs, we all gazed with open-mouthed horror at our television sets as Kanye West launched a direct attack on Taylor Swift in front of a national audience of millions of fans.
As Taylor accepted her victory in the best Female Video category for "You Belong With Me," Kanye bounced up on stage, snatching her microphone and publicly announcing to the entire music world that Beyonce deserved the award instead.
Breaking in, he said:
"Yo Taylor, I'm really happy for you, I'll let you finish, but Beyoncé has one of the best videos of all time. One of the best videos of all time!"
Relive the mortifying incident here, and particularly keep an eye out for Beyonce's horrified reaction:
Understandably, it was no surprise that Taylor was later seen hysterically crying backstage after Kanye's personal attack. Realizing the error of his ways, he posted an apology, soaked with sarcasm, on his blog:
"I'm sooooo sorry to taylor swift and her fans and her mom. I spoke to her mother right after and she said the same thing my mother would've said. She is very talented! I like the lyrics about being a cheerleader and she's in the bleachers! i'm in the wrong for going on stage and taking away from her moment!. beyonce's video was the best of this decade! I'm sorry to my fans if I let you guys down! I'm sorry to my friends at mtv. I will apologize to taylor 2mrw. welcome to the real world! everybody wanna booooo me but i'm a fan of real pop culture! No disrespect but we watchin' the show at the crib right now cause ... well you know! i'm still happy for taylor! Boooyaaawwww! you are very very talented! I gave my awards to outkast when they deserved it over me... that's what it is!! i'm not crazy yall, i'm just real. Sorry for that! I really feel bad for taylor and i'm sincerely sorry! Much respect!!"
Doesn't seem like a very heart-felt apology to me, Kanye.
Yet, six years on, have the two finally made amends?
At this year's Grammys, the world held its breath when Taylor and Kanye were spotted together at the ceremony and shook hands publicly for the very first time.
Based on the photos taken that night, it looks like the 2009 VMA feud is over and there is no more beef! Take a look at the images:
If that doesn't look like a solid friendly handshake, I don't know what does!
Even Kim gets involved in the loving reconciliation. It must be for real!
Although it is unknown what suddenly sparked such a wave of friendship, I'm very happy that the two finally buried the hatchet. In such a close-knit music industry, there is no place for hateful words and animosity... right?
But can a leopard change its spots?
It seems that Kanye being Kanye just went did it all over again. Bum-rushing the stage in another apparent attempt to defend Beyonce's musical integrity, it really looked like he was about to start some new beef. This time with a stunned Beck!
After it was announced that the Album of the Year was not going to the Queen of R&B, Kanye walked up on stage as if he was going to interrupt again. Yet this time, he paused, smiled and turned back around. Finally, we could breathe a sigh of relief that this time, it was only JOKE! (At least we hope it was and not that he just momentarily overcame his urge to be a massive dick...)
Check out Beyonce's flabbergasted reaction to his prank below!
Later on in the night however, Kanye continued to huff and puff at the award ceremony, lashing out:
"At this point, we tired of it! [...] Because what happens is, when you keep on diminishing art and not respecting the craft and smacking people in the face after they deliver monumental feats of music, you're disrespectful to inspiration. And we as musicians have to inspire people who go to work every day and listen to that Beyoncé album, and they feel like it takes them to another place. Then they do this whole promotional event, and they'll run the music over somebody's speech, an artist, because they want commercial advertising. No, we not playing with them no more."
Kanye, we love you, but you really need to chill out and pretending that you're the world authority on everything.
What do YOU guys think of Kanye's behavior!?
