When it comes to the upcoming film debut of Captain Marvel - Earth's Mightiest Hero, long-time Avenger and soon-to-be Marvel Movie Star - there aren't too many rumors we haven't heard at this point. Whether it's a new suggestion for who could take the title role - the smart money's still probably on Natalie Dormer - or who'll be sitting in the director's chair, there's been a near constant stream of rumors.
The latest, though, may just be the most intriguing of them all. According to the UK's OK! Magazine, Marvel may just have made a decision, and...
Angelina Jolie Might Be Directing Captain Marvel
Or, at least, according to the magazine, she's Marvel's top choice to head the project. As they put it:
"Having female director is a priority for them [Marvel]. She never thought she'd be in such huge demand as a director, and to be courted by Marvel after the Sony fiasco is a huge pat on the back."
The word is that the recent Unbroken was seen by key figures at Marvel as proof that Jolie could manage a major project like Captain Marvel - and have offered her $20 million to direct.
Now, since OK! magazine aren't a terribly reliable source when it comes to anything unrelated to celebrity weddings, and Marvel is notoriously reluctant to pay it's directors anything close to $20 million for a movie, this one probably still has to go into the 'solidly unconfirmed rumors' column - and yet, it's actually not as unlikely as it might seem.
What's more, there are a few solid reasons why - if it happens - it might just be a great call on Marvel's part. Moviepilot's own Alisha Grauso has already talked about just why she'd be perfect to direct Wonder Woman, but here are my top three reasons she could well be the right fit for Marvel, and Captain Marvel...
3. Jolie Is About the Most High-Profile Female Director Out There
It's arguably a shame - since there are a whole lot of female directors out there who've been creating fantastic movies for decades, only to be largely overlooked by the industry establishment and general public - but Jolie is very much the most high-profile candidate Marvel could opt for, while still staying true to their presumed goal of hiring a female director.
2. Jolie Is Great at What She Does
Now, a lot of people remain pretty un-convinced about Jolie - both as an actor and as a director - but a whole lot of that has to do with her sometimes controversial role as a celebrity, mother and spokesperson, and as an outspoken advocate for countless causes.
Whether you agree with her politics, advocacy or career decisions though - and since she's done a pretty ridiculous amount of humanitarian work, she's clearly doing a lot more good than most celebrities out there - she's undeniably a relentlessly competent, hard-working and creatively engaged person.
All skills that anyone taking on a job directing for Marvel Studios definitely needs.
Most of all, though?
1. Jolie Knows Everything There Is to Know About Kicking Ass
I mean, she's probably forgotten more than the rest of us'll ever know about bad-ass, action-packed models of awesome femininity.
I mean, between Gone in 60 Seconds, Tomb Raider, Mr. and Mrs. Smith, Wanted, Kung Fu Panda and Salt, she's kicked more ass on screen than most male action stars - let alone her severely under-represented female contemporaries.
See what I mean?
So, honestly, if Jolie couldn't do the decidedly awesome Captain Marvel justice on screen, it's hard to know who could...
