Sir Michael Gambon famous for portraying Dumbledore in the Harry Potter series has taken retirement from theater because of his memory problems.
Gambon now 74, explained in an interview with the Sunday times magazine that he quickly forgets the scripts that he reads. “It’s a horrible thing to admit, but I can’t do it. It breaks my heart. It’s when the script’s in front of me and it takes forever to learn. It’s frightening,” he said.
The acclaimed actor has put down his acting career as a theater artist due to his age. He fears it might be an early onset of Alzheimer's, but his doctors have cleared him of any signs.
In 2009, Gambon was rushed to the hospital twice after having panic attacks because of the stress brought on by forgetting his lines at the National Theater of London.
The Sunday Times magazine reported that Gambon was due to appear in a play with Tom Hollander last year but withdrew from the production shortly after rehearsals began. "There was a girl in the wings, and I had a plug in my ear so she could read me the lines," he said. "And after about an hour, I thought, ‘This can’t work.’ You can’t be in theater, free on stage shouting and screaming and running around, with someone reading you your lines." Gambon has been dealing with several problems of forgetfulness and has finally decided to end his theater acting.
His famous Theater pieces include Othello (his favorite), Macbeth, Coriolanus, All That Fall, The Caretaker, The Life of Galileo and many more.
He will be seen however in the cinematic world. Though he has taken a retirement from theater acting, he will still star in films and TV. He will be seen next in BBC's The Casual Vacancy (TV mini series) and in the Dad’s Army big-screen remake.
