So I am assuming everyone on MoviePilot knows that there is a DC Cinematic Universe on it's way with films planned for the next 5 years or so, Man of Steel(2013) and Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016) being the second part of the universe, exactly how Iron Man & The Incredible Hulk (2008) were to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

After the huge successes of the Christopher Nolan's Dark Knight trilogy it's not surprising as to why somewhere between 2016 and 2020, DC Comics out is bringing out the new Batman reboot starring the new casted Batman Ben Affleck.

Ben Affleck as the new caped crusader.
Ben Affleck as the new caped crusader.

But with great characters must come great story telling to really give the characters that we all know and love the justice that they deserve, examples like the Dark Knight or the Man of the Steel, arguably two of the best comic book films ever made (AND no Batman and Robin is not one of the best, you troll). So how can this be done for Batman? One answer, one simple friggin answer.

Yes that's right! The Court of the Owls(Created by Scott Snyder), this DC story first made it's proper appearance in Batman #5 in the new 52. Even the first volume gave me sense of wonder, suspicion and excitement unlike any other comic book or even any other book has given me before, now before I start waffling, here's the description.

The Court of Owls is an organized crime group and secret society in Batman and other DC Comics. They have secretly existed since Colonial times in Gotham City. The Court kidnaps child performers from the circus, only to train and transform them into their assassins, known as Talons.

The Court of the Owls could be what Hydra was to the MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe), they hide in the shadows and take out anyone who threatens there goals or existence. HYDRA (Captain America: The Winter Soldier) showed that Howard Stark, Nick Fury and others were killed by HYDRA and we can only assume because they were asking too many questions (The result of Nick Fury having Black Widow steal information from the kidnapped SHIELD vessel). The Court of the Owls could be a pivotal role in the whole DCCU (DC Cinematic Universe) and could change events forever, Batman could be forced to leave the Justice League and save his own city from destruction, I mean just an idea, but it would be awesome!

Now even though the Court of the Owls has not been given it's own film animation or live action film either, they will in-fact make their first on screen debut in the new upcoming DC Animation "Batman Vs Robin". Not a lot of details have been given out so far about the Court, but we can expect the animation to do them justice in some way or another.

As the bar for comic books movies are being taken to new levels almost every single film recently, each company has to keep this up if they want to stay in the competition and I do believe that the Court of the Owls is one of the story lines that has so much potential with all the different backstories that are included. Everything in Gotham has changed, now the best detective in the world doesn't even know the very streets of the city he grew up in and protected. Batman has not only got to adapt to this, but take on and stay vigilant of the fearful assailants of the Court of the Owls, known as the talons.

Be careful, Bruce.
Be careful, Bruce.

So if you're already interested in the book, whether it's through what I have said or the video trailer (probably the trailer) and you want to experience the Court of the Owls first hand, then for your assistance the next part of this article will be blurred out or 'spoilered' out for those who don't want the background story or any key lines from the novel ruined. But let me just say that none of the following are really massive spoilers, you can still experience the book just as well but just for those would like to experience about the Court of the Owls first hand through the book, then the next few lines are NOT for you.

So who are the Talons?

Throughout the existence of the Court of the Owls the talons have always existed, the Talons are a group of loyal assassins that are sent out by the court when they feel that there place or existence is being threatened by someone or something.

According to the Batman wiki, the Talons have been around for centuries and the earliest Talon they have on record is from 1666.

The Talons belong to the famous Gotham Nursery Rhyme;

Beware the Court of Owls, that watches all the time,

Ruling Gotham from a shadowed perch, behind granite and lime.

They watch you at your hearth, they watch you in your bed.

Speak not a whispered word about them, or they'll send the Talon for your head.

The Court of the Owls kicked Batman's ass and then screwed with his mind and they were not done there.

The Talons trapped Batman in what to him was a never ending maze for a week, no access to food and the only way he kept alive was through the drugged fountain water which made the maze an even more a living hell through different visions and hallucinations.
