Watching even one episode of AMC's [The Walking Dead](series:201193), it's pretty obvious that it's not a show for the faint of heart: rotting corpses, frequent violent brawls and characters who haven't had a bath for months. However, I recently discovered that actually there was a time when our fave vampire TV show, [The Vampire Diaries](series:200853) was a lot more blood thirsty than it's zombie counterpart over on The Walking Dead!

A study conducted over on Funeralwise.com, published in May 2012, took eight episodes from a variety of popular TV shows, including The Vampire Diaries and The Walking Dead and analyzed them for deaths, it sounds a bit grim, but when your business is funerals then it only makes sense! Now this study is from May 2012, so obviously the numbers aren't from the current seasons of the TV shows, but they are accurate for the seasons that screened at the time, which by my calculations are Season 3 of The Vampire Diaries and Season 2 of The Walking Dead.

The study found that the deadliest show for non-human creatures (vampires, zombies, werewolves, etc.) was The Vampire Diaries, with an average of 18 dead vampires per episode! Wow, that's a lot of staking, head-tearing and burning of vampires! I can't help but think the Salvatore brothers would be proud, especially Stefan...we all know that dude gets carried away sometimes...

In comparison, The Walking Dead - which has a much bigger reputation for its violent killing of walkers - managed an average of 16 dead (or re-dead?) walkers per episode. While this is certainly not an unimpressive number, it's not exactly the outcome you would have predicted if you had to choose which of the two shows had the most non-human kills.

Though I can't say it isn't totally surprising when you have characters like Alaric in The Vampire Diaries, who has died approximately SEVEN times! Though usually most of the vampires or supernaturals who die in the show don't get the honor of returning from the grave quite as much as him.

One thing is for sure, The Vampire Diaries might often get passed off as a soppy, romantic show for girls, but this definitely proves it has just as much and sometimes more ass kicking and violent moments as one of TVs most gory shows! Nice one, vamps!
